Why won't my riding mower go in reverse.

So I threw in the sponge and bought a lawn tractor. I had a plow put on it. There is a reverse gear, but it will not go backwards. Last time I started it, it went into reverse a few times, then it would not do it again. WTF?

My snowblower has a completely flat tire - and I have no pump. It's going to be really nasty once we get that first big snowfall....:scared:

4. Edit. I see it says "gear". not hydrostatic.

6. Don't know. It's an automatic going forward. The mower is new.

I don't know if that is helpful.

7. Do you reverse it with a shifter or pedal?

8. Depress pedal, then shift into reverse by hand. Release pedal.

10. Look into the shift linkage being out of adjustment....

probably something simple like that. Especially if it has been getting harder to shift over time.

14. Actually, it was a sudden failure.

I tried to do some plowing in one direction. Now it won't go in either direction. It still rolls freely in nuetral.

19. I have a John Deere

And it will not go in reverse if the mower is engaged unless I press a button when I first start backing.

Does your owners manual mention anything like that?

20. If it's a John Deere, you have to hold in a 'button' to go in reverse while the thing is 'engaged'.

Don't know what you have to do with a plow, but if my mower blades are turning, I have to hold the button to back up. Safety thing to not cut someone's foot off.
