I got a root canal this afternoon, and the doc prescribed me Vicodin ES for the pain. I took one before I left the parking lot of the pharmacy, as the Novocaine (tm) was starting to wear off. That was over an hour ago, and I'm still completely aware of my surroundings and in full control of all of my limbs. As the kids these days might say, WTF?

(On the other hand, maybe it's starting to work. It took me three tries to successfully type "WTF.")

6. Ding-Ding! Wildhorses wins the prize!
Charlie, tell her what she won---
:D

Seriously though, Vicodin ES works to take away/take the edge off the pain.
Most of it goes directly to work on the pain,
meaning you may not get a buzz if there is sufficient pain for it to work on.

Confusing, yes- but it's twue- it's twue, I tell ya.

Hope you feel better!

pain is bad

meds that help are good

having worked in a chronic pain clinic in the past I can say that it is a tough balance sometimes with chronic pain, but with acute pain like this, pain meds are indicated

All sorts of things affect drug absorption, activity, etc.

The half dozen times or so I've been prescribed hydrocodone, I've noticed that it takes a couple of days of use before it really starts kicking in.

18. Can't tell you why you're not buzzing but I do have some advice for the dental pain
Let a large frozen item drop out of the freezer and onto your big toe. I promise you will no longer feel the dental pain! That's how it worked for me anyway :-D ITA that if you're PAYING the dentist to hurt you s/he could at least give you decent meds! Sadists.

I take Vicodin several times a week for chronic pain and maybe I'm developing a tolerance but I no longer notice any buzz at all just a dulling (not resolution) of the pain. I think Vicodin has a reputation that exceeds it's actual performance.

Hope the mouth feels better soon.

24. Because It Isn't Something Designed To Make You Incoherent
it is a synthetic narcotic that makes some sleepy but I've seen lots of people who don't get sleepy with hydrocodone

I am a case in point. I've had hydrocodone and it actually hypes me up, it blunts the pain, but it isn't a "knockout drug"

Be careful taking it and don't take too many as it has acetaminophen which is hard on the liver in too large of doses. And don't take tylenol with it or anything like that.

Not to be taken as anything other than anecdotal advice

40. That's Quite A Combination
but not that uncommon

Klonopin is something that I take in very small doses for anxiety. I've tried all the SSRI's and while I take Paxil too, the small, (I mean really small) dose seems to be the extra kick that I need to not feel panicked.

North LR, right?

I was down in LR last week for a board meeting. I hate driving down there for those because I leave at the crack of dawn and the sun is shining (it wasn't much that day) in my eyes.

The traffic always sucks from about Conway on until I 430

Klonipin, while I had reservations about taking it as I had a history of problems with alcohol, has helped my anxiety tremendously.

I don't take those things unless I've had some surgery or dental work.

Usually my dentist never gives me anything for anything.

Last time I had any pain meds was when I hurt my back and I took Darvocet. It helped the pain, made me awake, and talkative?

The dental work was my only time to use pain pills ever.
I hope to avoid any more.

All my wisdom teeth are gone and my old fillings are crowned.

I do like the look of the crowns, no ugly fillings to look at.

That was expensive work, what I could have done with that $5000.

46. That's Amazing that you've never had pain pills
Of course I have to watch myself because I have a brain that will tell me I need something when maybe I don't. The Darvocet worked to get my back out of the spasm it got itself into that I could hardly walk. I took one of those and an hour later I could sit without grimacing and feeling the spasm.

A day or two later after taking those mostly at night, I was better and didn't need them anymore.

I feel fortunate that I've been working out a lot and it's made my back much stronger and despite the fact that there are messed up discs there, I don't have any pain that is worth mentioning anymore.

Of course, none of the chores are getting done. Sometimes it just relieves the pain and not much else-- although I don't like the way it often screws up my sleep-- and other times I nod uncontrollably. Tonight I'm just pleasantly mellow, and my foot doesn't hurt much.

I really should get up and clean the kitchen, though.

48. Vicodin is supposed to make you incoherent?
I was given that after my wisdom teeth were removed. All it did was killed the pain for a couple of hours, leaving me in pain until I was supposed to take the next one. Then after 3 or 4 doses, it made me rather sick to my stomach. Most medicines that have drowsiness as a possible side effect make me drowsy, but vicodin didn't. I didn't even know vicodin was a real narcotic, which do make me drowsy..

54. Vicodin are candy.
I can't take them because I'd have to take way too much for them to do any good. :(
