My daughter's friend has been trying to cut his wrists (2nd grade)
I have been trying to get more info from her today but she told me that he had to be moved to the front of the class and all his pencils were taken from him because he was trying to shove them down into the bandaged areas.

Now I can't get the story straight but my daughter says the kid lives with his grandparents and that his parents may be dead...and then she started wandering with the story a bit...I get fragments of his dad may be a soldier...and that his mom was pregnant...but he hasn't seen them ...but I am not sure of any of this but I am going to call the school to ask if the story is true and if kid is getting help because it clearly upset my daughter and I feel bad for the kid...I am not going to pry but something like this is hard for kids to understand.

Just last week she told my husband this kid had crush on her (he told her that he like her)...now we hear this and we aren't sure what to think...

2. Proceed with caution.
You may not be able to find out much about
him due to privacy laws and the school's liability.

But, you sure can alert them to his self destructive
behavior and find out what help he is getting/can get
from the school.

Good luck.
I hope that poor kid gets the help he needs, soon.

3. all I am going to do is call and say that this situation upset my daughter
and that I hope the kid is okay and that he is getting help.

I do not intend to pry.

9. sometimes I think I might appear like a pest
like the time the boy up the street had the bad cut on his arm from a fall and his mother did nothing with it...
a few days later I see him at the bus stop (it was late spring) and he has pus forming on it. I called the school and begged them to have the nurse call him down to take a look at it...and told them that I was worried about him.

11. You're not a pest at all-

You give a damn and that's great!

It sure beats not caring/ not doing anything to
help others.

:hi:

5. I doubt I can get much due to the privacy stuff but I just want to
let the school know that my daughter came home asking questions about why someone would cut themselves and just to say that I hope someone is getting him help.

13. If you have a half way decent school system,
they won't give you info about the child's particular life and problems but will help you with contacting the school psychologist about how to talk to your daughter about the situation. You are not being nosy. You are just trying to find out to deal with your daughters confusion. It sounds like the child is on a low level suicide watch. Possibly he was using the pencils to scratch healing wounds, but who the heck would take that chance.
