Is Piper Laurie the only actress who can play a crazy mother?
It's starting to bug me - the woman has made a cottage industry out of playing the same freakin' role over and over again. The reason it annoys me is that it takes me out of the movie. I saw that indie movie The Dead Girl last week (dark but very good) - and she ruined the first vignette for me because it was like watching her doing a parody of her Carrie role.

Am I the only one plagued by this?

Hounddog is the bete noire at this year's Sundance Film Festival... Starring Dakota Fanning in an absolutely riveting performance, the film, directed by Deborah Kampmeier, is a cautionary tale of what happens to all too many young girls.... Lewellen shuttles back and forth between living with her abusive, alcoholic father (David Morse) and her strict, God-fearing grandmother (Piper Laurie, reprising her role from Carrie).

2. No. Hugh Laurie is British, and Piper Laurie is American (born in Michigan)
I had to look that up, just in case. :)

3. Joan Crawford did a fine job of it.
Also I can't remember the name of the movie, but I believe Cybil Shepherd played one once too and did a fine job of it, if I remember correctly.

9. CLASSIC!
Joan Crawford: Why can't you give me the respect that I'm entitled to? Why can't you treat me like I would be treated by any stranger on the street?
Christina: Because I am NOT one of your fans.

8. Heard about that movie - one of the Sundance Fest films
I read a quote of hers, paraphrasing - When I read the script, I thought, can't play this, I'm a mother. Then I thought, wait a minute. I'm a mother. I should play this.
