The MNkids and I just went and looked at some houses,
and I'm totally in love with one. My eight-year-old likes it too, but my five-year-old is in fervent disagreement with us, and says we should buy the (too small, ugly colored) one that "was smelling really good inside of it."

1. I wonder if that's a developmental thing
like, around 5 years old you're really into smells.

2. I don't know, but before she could go to the library with her Grandma today,
she needed me to sniff her and see if she "still smells good."
Yeah, there may be a pattern, here.

3. It is. Remember smelling paste and new crayons in school?
I remember the first time I bought play doh for my daughter. The smell brought back some amazing memories.

Olafactory memories actually stay with us the longest, interestingly.

4. I believe that!
Sometimes I get a whiff of some odor, and I feel like I'm sometime else.

6. Indeed!
I wasn't planning on being able to consider buying for a couple more years or so, but things have worked out favorably, and I think we're finally going to have our own home! After the traumatic job loss this summer, my husband's now making about 1/3 more money than he had been, and we were approved for a modest, but workable loan amount. I'm trying to temper my excitement with the possibility that something will go wrong and it won't work out, but so far, things look good! I have everything I've got crossed, right now!

7. wishing you well in your search
it's good to own a house. Good for gardening, and painting and decorating the way that you want, and thinking about millage and property taxes and such. Nothing feels so good as owning your own bit of land or property.

Have fun!

8. Thank you!
I'm really keen on a place we saw today that needs a fair amount of cosmetic work inside (paint, carpet, refinishing hardwood, minor remodeling, etc,) but is otherwise a pretty cool house. I'm totally game for doing it. I grew up helping my parents remodel their older homes, so I've experienced how rewarding it is to transform a home yourself. That's what I've always wanted to do.
