Damn, my dogs are freakin' idiots...
:spray:  A short while ago, a hunk of suet had fallen out of one of the bird feeders in our back yard. One of them was trying to eat it, and the other one was growling and barking at her. Hackles were up, and I had to break it up. They were still very pissy toward each other for a good while afterward too.

It's a good thing I don't have kids. I don't have the patience for dogs sometimes, let alone children. :yoiks:

1. My dogs were fighting over a pair of chewed up boxers of
my husbands that they weren't supposed to have in the first place. Where they got them? And I forgot to pick up one little shred of cloth they ripped from it and they started fighting over that. Dogs.... What to do? What to do?

4. My two adults argue constantly these days.
They get the same food, but each gives the other the evil eye and growls across the room, each wanting the other's bowl, or warning the other away from theirs. They argue over who gets to be on the couch (even though it's big enough for both). They maneuver over who gets to be on the bed with me. And they're supposed to have pups together this year!

5. My guys are too old to argue, they are like toddlers though
My English Bull is stubborn and demanding. My Lab happy and patient. They are both 12 this year. They have not fought since they were together. But the Bullie is a farting machine. Something the big guy never was.

6. It's all about hierarchy in the pack.
My two dogs bicker about everything, food, treats, toys, attention, as well as who goes out the door or up the stairs first... Even though we have clearly treated the older male as the alpha, the younger dog still tries to get the better of him.

Can you imagine the squabbling that goes on in a "real" pack?

7. Actually, you were witnessing a form of communication people don't get.
An alpha dog (it seems) and a "lesser" dog. No fight, no brutality. No blood.

Communication.

8. My two dogs ( I have 3, but one is beyond knowing she isn't alpha)
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 10:30 PM by Shell Beau
How do I get them to distinguish that? I always feed the one I feel is alpha first. I try to do the things that I have heard establishes that. I have a chow mix, which he feels he is top dog. Have had him for 5 years. Then I bring in the golden retriever-australian shepherd mix. He submitted for the longest. Now he is almost 90 lbs. while the chow mix is barely 50 lbs., and he knows he is bigger now. The younger one (golden) submits most of the time, but it can get ugly. Then my little mini-pin jumps in likes she is the real pin and gets hurt. The chow won't give up alpha. Period. He is a force to be reckoned with. The golden mix listens to me when I say stop fighting, but by then it has gotten really ugly. And then they will be best friends!!! Advice?

9. Honestly?
You can't get them to distinguish the dominant dog. What you NEED to do is establish the true alpha in your "pack" (you). Once you truly "rule the roost" they won't have issues so much.

PM me if you want more help.
