5. That's one of my favorites
I think it's cool that you can't scratch them, they will always stay shiny, and fairly cheap when compared to precious metals.

Plus, it just sounds cool to say that your ring is made of one of the hardest metals on earth.

9. How cheap?
Mine is white gold and we paid $200 for it nine years ago.

I love my ring but the coined texture and striking are wearing off and it has a stretch mark where they had to size it.

Those tungsten rings are beautiful! Anyone know where to get one?

18. at least they don't have the problem titanium used to have
being that you couldn't cut them. Now why would you need to cut a ring? well, imagine you are in an accident, and you need an MRI. if they can't cut your ring off, they cut your finger off instead. not fun.

tungsten is hard, but cuttable when need be. and you never need to polish it, it will show no wear, assuming your normal activities.

27. are they harder than platinum?
Platinum is quite heavy, doesn't wear away, and has a very high melting point. But it's quite expensive. They didn't have the technology to work with it until the early 1900's.
Ever seen those filigree pieces of Edwardian jewelry that have settings that look like spiderwebs?
That's platinum. You can't do that with gold, not enough ductility.

Disclaimer: I do not own any platinum or any tungsten either, except for light bulbs.

Another cool kind of ring is made out of mokume gane, which is a japanese word. They take different colored layers of metal and beat on them and fold them until they look like wood grain. Terrifically cool looking. Disclaimer: I don't own any mokume gane, either.

32. I think tungsten carbide is about as hard as it gets for metals.
The sites say that the rings have between 8.5 - 9.5 on the Moh's hardness scale. Only diamond or corundum would scratch them.

It would be impossible with a jewelers ring cutter, or most hand tools.

31. From what I understand...
... there wouldn't be a need to cut one off, as far as it being bent into your finger. Tungsten is REALLY hard but it isn't particularly bendable. Instead of bending, the ring would shatter.

Now as far as weight gain causing the ring to get stuck, I don't know.

Unless it's really expensive. I'm allergic to gold and allergic to the price of platinum. And I'm not too fond of having to clean silver all the time.

39. Thanks for the heads up
I do not wear my wedding ring due to weight gain and don't want to get it stretched. I think I will buy a tungsten ring as a replacement for my 20th wedding anniversary. I was going to buy my wife a new anniversary ring with the diamonds all around--now I can get us a new set; it's our 20th this summer.

42. Diamonds are the way to go.
Preferably diamonds from a war zone - you can often get a better deal on those. They call them "blood diamonds," apparently, but the thing to do is ignore that and concentrate on how pretty they are. After all, if anyone really did die for them, it happened thousands of miles away, and what's done is done.

44. Make sure to get tungsten CARBIDE
Apparently (according to e-wedding rings.com or whatever fucking site it was) some outfits that make tungsten rings are making pure tungsten rings, not tungsten carbide. Pure tungsten isn't all that hard. Tungsten carbide, which contains carbon andanother metal--they say nickel is the safest choice; cobalt alloy is an allergenic metal--is super hard. However, it's also brittle; it has no flexibility whatsoever. The main reason people need wedding bands cut off is that they crush the band in a door or something, and tungsten would break instead of bending if you hit it hard enough.

One thing to be aware of: you cannot resize a tungsten ring. Resizing requires bending, which destroys a tungsten ring, and melting at the weld points, which requires a plasma welder.
