I was able to buy this because I took care of my parents for years. When my mother died last December, my sister and I inherited the estate (including a house in Chicago that sold for more than $500,000) and which we split.

I was the one who lived with my mother until she died at age almost 94. I made is possible for her to live in her house until she died. And I work full time.

So I think I earned it. And thanks for the question. Had things been otherwise, my mother would have gone to a nursing home years ago. She was with it mentally until her heart attack. And I made it possible for her.

So I will enjoy it. It wasn't always fun. And I have a relatively small mortgage.

While the 1195 sq. ft./$132K restriction applies to Democrats living in towns with population less than 82,500 in red states, those who live in expensive urban areas near public transportation are given an allowance of nearly $300K. Depending on one's zip code, there are pretty wide standards as to what's considered acceptable housing.

In my town, there are many homes listed at under $132,000 that are over 1195 square foot. In other places, it is hard to find any home, even one under 1000 square feet that is under 132,000. What if the home is older in a bad location so that the replacment value is more than $132,000 but the home cost significantly less than that?
