What is the most spectacular car crash
you have been personally involved in?

And were you driving?

1. I was driving a mid nineties Ford Ranger. (A small pick-up)
I was struck at the right rear axle by a 2-1/2 ton work truck.

A short spin and flip, my pick-up ended up resting on the left side.

My arm was inside, I had seat belt properly applied.

Lived to tell the story.

Now that you've got me thinking, I was struck by a late 70's Crown Victoria
while riding my motorcycle.

3. Can't choose between 3
1. 1985 Ford Mustang. Car in my lane, passing, headed at me. Last moment, hit the brakes, swerved away from oncoming traffic. Telephone pole to my side of the car at 40 mph. 15 stitches. Would've been worse going passenger/girlfriend side first into traffic.

2. 1987 Buick Grand National. Yellow light. Dumbass in a VW Cabrio turns in front of me. I swerve hard, as t-boning her would kill her. Impact, then on to the huge concrete light pole. Driver's door won't open. Kick open the passenger door. Plot revenge for killing my GN.

3. 1990-somthing Mitsubishi Galant. Clearwater, FL. Drunk ass woman pulls out in front of us. Nail her. Damn near flip. She tries to drive off. I run into the street and grab her bumper that she left behind in the accident. Attached...her license plate.

I was driving in the first two. According to officials, I also wasn't supposed to live through them.

4. in late 2002, we were driving to Florida on I-10
it was my turn to drive, and it was at night. We were at a point in the road where the 2 lanes on our side were separated from the 2 lanes going the other way by a huge and very wide bank of trees. We were in the left lane of the 2 lane stretch, and the left tires struck a ribbed section of the roadway, which spun us completely around and across the 2 lanes, where the tires caught something, and spun us back around, and across the 2 lanes again, landing us in the trees, trunk first. It totaled the car, and the force with which the steering wheel was spinning snapped my left arm, breaking every bone thru my elbow.

Thankfully, Mr. ld, while severely shaken, was unharmed, as were our 2 dogs. Angels were definitely protecting us. My recovery took almost a year and a half to regain full use of my left arm.

They towed the car to a lot in some little town, and Mr. ld went back to check on the car, and talk to the insurance company. The owner of the lot shared that the following weekend, another couple had a car crash in *exactly* the same place we did, but both of them died in the crash. We were very lucky.

5. I hit a guy TWICE
I hit him... got out and exchanged information. Got back in our cars... and just cause I didn't like his style, I hit him again!

That's a true story, except the reason I hit him a second time.

15. Funny story
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 11:52 PM by Xipe Totec
I'll make it short.

Sister in law comes to visit from CA to Houston. Lots of people; rent a car. Traveling on multiple cars. She gets confused on a multi boulevard intersection. Blows past a stop light. Gets hit by another car. I witness from a third car.

I call the rental company from a nearby office building to report accident (avis). I give description of crash site, and vehicle.

What about the other car? I describe it - also an Avis rental, rented by a guy from New York.

What about you, which car where you in? I was in a third car....

Oh, my God, I hope it was a Hertz! - exclaimed the flustered Avis representative...

6. Ok, just to keep it live,
here is ONE of mine...

I blow past a stop sign that is not there (a drunk knocked it down the previous night).

I'm driving. My mother and my grandmother are in the vehicle (Ford Fairlane, 1970 station wagon).

I get broad sided on the driver's side by a pick'em up truck, at the post between front and rear doors.

Station wagon rears up on right two wheels.

My station wagon crashes onto brand new, sticker-still-on-window, Ford Kingswood Estate station wagon.

Kingswood lurches forward and hits another car (four door sedan of some kind).

Pick'em up truck crashes onto another vehicle, that crashes onto yet another one.

No deaths, no injuries, not even a scratch on any of the passengers.

This happens in Mexico where, I am not kidding, traffic accidents are criminal, not civil, violations.

A transit arbiter is called to investigate.

The arbiter rules: In the absence of traffic signs, north-south traffic has right of way over east-west traffic.

I was traveling east...

11. 1999
Northern Alberta, was drowsy from a poor night's sleep and fell asleep at the wheel, drifted into oncoming traffic and head-on at approximately 200 kph combined speed. I was in a Dodge Dakota, he had a Ford F150.

We both walked away. Seat belts and air bags, gotta love 'em.

12. I wasn't in the vehicle, but this was VERY personal
My mom was driving a car with a close friend in the front seat. The friend's two year old son was also in the vehicle. They T-boned a car with an elderly female driver, who later died. I was at work when I got the call- I rushed halfway across the county to find my mom and the friend (whom I had had a crush on since I was about twelve) in separate beds in the emergency room. I was the one who had to stand there holding her hand while telling my love that her son had been airlifted by helicopter to Cincinnati for emergency surgery. (Thank God he survived his injuries.) After holding her in my arms and letting her cry on my shoulder for a while I then had to hold my mom's hand while they picked all the chunks of safety glass from her skin.

NOT a pleasant evening.

19. I don't mind.
This happened back in the early eighties- I've long since dealt with it, and my mom's since passed on. The boy's long since grown up, and I've lost track of my unrequited love.

13. Wasn't a crash, per se
I was going too fast down an incline on Highway 1 after a rainstorm. Hit a puddle at the bottom and felt the front wheels start to hydroplane. The rear end went about 30 degrees left, then I over-corrected and spun it nearly 360 degrees to the right.

Fortunately, that stretch of Highway 1 has a very wide median, and that's where I ended up, perpendicular to the highway and about 50 feet short of a barrier around an electrical box.

20. Hydroplaning,
reminded me of the time I was driving back to the drilling rigs in Mexico.

My father and his closest pal are sleeping in the pick up cabin while I drive.

It's around midnight and I get to a low spot on the highway doing about 85mph.

There's water over the road. I hit the brakes to try to stop, but it's too late.

Suddenly, the pick up truck hits the water, and there is spray washing over the truck.

I am suddenly in a white cocoon, surrounded by a wall of water, while the truck does two perfect 360 turns as it hydroplanes down the road.

The truck comes to a stop. steam boils from the engine compartment, where the wall of water hit the engine and killed it.

My father wakes up. What's going on?

Oh, nothing, dad, just stopped for a moment to take a breather...

14. My dad's 1976 Ford Elite.
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 11:52 PM by Kutjara
He was driving it on country roads near Banbury in the UK. A Morris Traveler (think small Tudor station wagon), turned right across our path and stalled. We were doing about 60 when we hit it. The Traveler launched into the air and spun like a top, landing on the hood of a car coming from the opposite direction, pinning the driver of that car's hand to the steering wheel. The engine of the Traveler flew off in a different direction and ended up in a ditch about 500 feet away.

I was thrown through the windshield (only sissies wore seatbelts back in the mid 70s) and, luckily, managed to grab hold of the hood ornament to keep myself from landing in the road and getting run over by my own car.

The two occupants of the Traveler survived but were very badly injured. Ironically, the husband who was driving didn't have a license or insurance. His wife (the passenger) did have a license but wasn't driving because she was still recovering from having her leg amputated after a car crash she caused trying to race a train to an unmarked crossing the previous year.

Because our Ford was a massive "Yank Tank" and so much bigger than the Morris, we were only minorly hurt. I spent months picking bits of glass out of my head as they worked to the surface. My mother had to have a few stitches and my dad was uninjured. God bless American excess.

18. I was about 21 years old at the time
I was driving my restored 1965 Impala SS in a rain storm. I was stopped at the lights, when I looked in my rearview and thought "fucker's not going to stop!" And I got rear-ended by a 1974 Impala at about 40 mph. He never hit the brakes. 16 yr old kid, high and drunk, with 3 passengers, in a stolen car, with open beer. They pushed me into the crosswalk where 2 girls ended up on my hood, rolled off, and were shaken up but fine. My Impala had low-back buckets, and my head snapped back, then forward, connecting with the steering wheel or dash, don't remember. Blood on my forehead, dazed a bit, I slumped over the wheel, not daring to move.

The three passengers in the '74 were heard to yell "get the weed" before they ran off. The driver got in my passenger door and asked me not to call the cops, since he had already lost his license and didn't have insurance, plus he claimed to have "borrowed" the car from a friend without asking. I proceeded to put him in a headlock and would not let go until the cops got there. The first thing the cops asked was if I drunk. I replied, "No, but I think I am hurt..."

The Impala rear end was buckled way in, both quarter panels bent up, rear bumper totalled, trunk totalled, tail lights smashed. Ugly but actually drivable, at least I drove it to the hospital to get checked out, and then home.

Never saw a penny from the kid or his family, but he was forbidden to drive until he was 21, which I'm sure didn't matter to him...

26. Never Been In A Crash........
.....but I have witnessed a few. The worst was when I was nine years old and was with my family on the way to our summer home. There was this really bad head-on collision on the highway. Body parts, blood, gore, etc. My Dad wanted to stop to see if there were any survivors and to just help out if he could, but my Mom freaked out at him. She didn't want my brother and I to see that kind of carnage, but it was too late really. We saw everything from the back seat as we were driving past. I'll never forget that.
