Minnehaha Falls

(the picture isn't mine - for about 5 damn good reasons, but it does show one feature...)

Behind the falls is fairly accessible. I've always wanted to go there during winter, when it's frozen, and take some snapshots.

Should I do that this weekend when it's said to be cold out? Seeing it in its frozen glory, shooting from many angles - including from behind, it must make an awesome display at the right angles (which means not the one seen above, which shows an utter lack of instinct or eye for detail... I'd give them one of mine but it's a commercial piece.)

1. Yes. I have some wonderful pictures of the falls taken on a March day...
It was 11 years ago, very unseasonably warm. The falls are frozen, but it was such a nice day! I'll dig them up and scan them for you.

3. By birth and raising, yes. I moved to Idaho six years ago at age 34.

5. I'd LOVE to see your photos.
Yes, GO!

:hi:

I wish I could see them. There are some cool falls near here--well, in Alabama. Noccalula Falls, in Gadsden, AL. Here's a photo of those (not my photo). I doubt they'll ever freeze, though.

I need to update my portfolio site as well. Especially once the new pics are developed...

8. Post 'em when you get back.
Would you send me a PM to let me know that you've posted them?

I'm not around too much these days.

11. Okay...
1. The pic is directly head-on. That alone is a turn-off. Angles are always better.
2. The area itself looks artificial and contained. Nature is supposed to be wide open and unyielding. I can think of a dozen positions that make the area look less claustrophobic yet more atmospheric... that picture, to me, is about as welcoming as a mens' urinal...
3. This is an area where the 'trite waterfall effect' lens trick should be applied; to give it a sense of fluidity.
4. Another reason why it's not realistic - you can't see the litter or graffiti.
5. The exposure was set too long. I usually use overexposed pics for more amusing ventures, but I digress. Especially given this was shot at a fast shutter speed (the 'still' look to the falls), and how the water at the bottom of the falls is pure white, the camera used must be low-end a digital one. (overexposed film also looks pure white, but the falloff back to detail gradient is much smoother...)

Man, have I restrained from making any number of perverse references!

Cool! I have never been there in the winter. You'll have to share your pictures.

12. It has in past years...
And this weekend it should remain cold enough... it's been quite cold the last few days, though today it got up to 35. That should probably help things a tad...
