First, I seriously question the sincerity of most of the people complaining about Edwards' house. (The Kennedy's have a whole compound, and so does the Bush family). A big house is not new to politicians. What IS new is that Edwards earned every penny he's spending. So much for elitism. This is "swifthousing."

Second, Edwards personal choices in his personal life are sometimes fair game to criticize. Privilege comes with responsibility, and it's not unreasonable to be disappointed in some personal choices. However, there is a line between personal and private. Edwards' policy choices are important; his house is not.

Third, John Edwards is one of the least wealthy politicians and he is a self-made person. All of this talk about his being too rich or too snobby or too elitist is simply not accurate.

Fourth, there is no vow of poverty in politics.

Fifth, the poor are not necessarily holier than the rich - exhibit A --> free republic. However, I do think that adversity can encourage compassion, and being privileged allows one to not care - exhibit B --> George W. Bush, Paris Hilton, Super Sweet 16 brats. It's all about personal choices.
