Which is your favorite American city?
A while back, I had a job that required a lot of travel and I've been to many cities and rural areas around the country. But for me, there's no place on earth like San Francisco.

Aside from the city's incredible location and fantastic scenery, the people seemed friendlier than elsewhere. One afternoon, I bought a kite, stretched out on the grass and flew it. More than a few passersby loved the kite and shared their joints with me.

But there's more to that city than just getting stoned. I wish I could describe it. Perhaps it's the history of a city that's been destroyed by earthquakes and fire and rebuilt more than once.

If I had to sum up San Francisco's charm, the single word that comes to mind is "tolerance." A hard thing to find in most places, but San Francisco is the virtual definition of the word.

There are many other places in this country that I love, but none of them can hold a candle to San Francisco.

So what's your favorite city? And why?

1. New York
There's no place like it in the world and it gives me a fantastic and exciting buzz whenever I visit. It also helps that it is a short train ride away from my home. Boston would be second on my list, I always had a great time when I visited there plus all of the history in that city.

17. well, the food is the best no doubt about that for new orleans
Edited on Sat Jan-27-07 08:25 PM by pitohui
but frankly i'd do anything to be able to get out of here

good food, good birds, that's it, otherwise it stinks (okay, music but i'm pretty tone deaf so i don't much care about that), i can't believe i've been here so many decades

it's so bad that i asked hubby to see if he could get a job w. a competitor in detroit

my favorite city in theory is chicago but sadly it's to vegas that i always return

7. I used to travel a lot too for business
and I got to go to a lot of places a girl from Bham, AL would not otherwise been able to go. I'd have to go with a toss-up between NOLA (where my DH is from) and San Francisco. Most people that I know who have been to both (pre-Katrina, of course) will note a lot of similarities between the two. Seattle would have to be a close runner-up.

I love it here. I think the combination of the midwesternism and then the fascinating history has created a pretty neat city. Plus, I think it is quite pretty.

28. I'd agree with you about SF, except for one thing
The cost of living. I know, you get what you pay for, but
it'd be nice to be able to afford to live in such a
beautiful place. I enjoy my occasional visits there
VERY much.

My second choice would be, I hope you're sitting down,
San Antonio, TX. One of the most culturally diverse cities
in America. Spanish, German, cowboy(old time). Also, Bexar
County votes virtually always Democratic, just like Travis
County (Austin) a bit to the north.

Every time I deliver near there, I arrange to be "out of
hours"-truckerspeak for "Feds say I can't drive for 24 hours".

People were so friendly, it's easy to get around. Never felt like a big city. It's ruined me where other cities are concerned. Nothing measures up.

I believe it would be called the “Little Italy” section in New York. Check out the cost of living, and compare it to other places.

36. NYC & Philly
If you've never visited the City that Never Sleeps...not ot worrry, just rent "The Devil Wears Prada"...Philly is simply a City of Neighborhoods that epitomizes "Uptown.Down Home."

I love being able to visit both cities on the wildest whims...as in SoHo for lunch.

That's my 3 cents!

37. Boston
I spent a very memorable five days there last summer. It was easy to get around on foot and the people were so friendly. Also, I like historical cities and much of Boston is beautifully preserved. I also liked the fact that most of the freeway system is underground and out of sight. I would love to go back there and will one day.

I still love Detroit, but Baltimore has wowed me now that I live in Maryland. I work in DC which has a lot to recommend it, too - restaurants, no buildings taller than the Capitol and of course all the fabulous museums.
