Poll question: Favorite concept band
I'm working on a pretty good beer buzz at the moment so my mind isn't working very well. When I first came up with this poll I thought I could come up with more bands but I'm drawing a blank other than the 3 listed so feel free to add others.

Anyway, my choice is Gorillaz. I can listen to them over and over and over. Back in the late 80's though I did hang out some at the Slave Pit in Richmond with GWAR so they do have a soft spot in my heart. Just to me they hit on a formula and didn't progress any after about 1991.

2. Damn, you're going to make me think
Umm, instead of a band that gets together just to make music they come up with whole new personas or characters and then create music around that. Gorillaz got the cartoon thing, GWAR the aliens from Antartica, Dread Zeppelin an Elvis impersonator singing Led Zeppelin songs to a reggae beat.

4. Like Slipknot?
And would ICP fit in the category of concept?

7. Probably
To be honest I've never listened to ICP but aren't they wrestling clowns that play nu-metal or something along those lines? Slipknot just gives me a headache but they seem to be a concept band.

I suppose there were boy bands even _before_ the Beatles.

At least you didn't kick the crap out of me for being truthful, though. :D

13. The Beatles were not a boy band
"Boy bands" do not write songs or play instruments. Lennon/McCartney were heralded as the greatest songwriters of the 20th century.

The Beach Boys (aside from Brian) would fit the boy band definition much better, since they didn't play on most of their records.

14. if one of your first hits is "I want to hold your hand" you're a boyband

What's amazing is that they actually were able to evolve from boybanddom and be credible. That isn't allowed any more, as Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch has shown.

6. Dread Zeppelin were an interesting mix
A reggae band, playing Zeppelin covers, with an Elvis impersonator on lead vocals. I couldn't have made that up even on mushrooms :hippie:

15. Dschinghis Khan
(If I spelled that right; there are about 5 different ways you could conceivably spell it.) I think they'd count as a concept band under your definition. From Germany in the 70's or so. They did mostly songs about historical figures or places, or distant adventurous lands. They did many of their songs in both German and English, and dressed up in "Mongol" attire. Pretty cool stuff! I have to say they were educational as well as entertaining, too, because I didn't know anything about the history of Macchu Picchu until I heard their very engaging song about the Incan lost city!
