Valentines Day gift ideas? I need help from the DU ladies.
Edited on Sun Jan-28-07 11:54 AM by jasonc
Hi Fellow Loungers, I have a dilemma.

I am in MN working, and I have a very special girl in Michigan in grad school for one more semester before she comes back to MN as well. my problem is this, valentines day is on Wednesday this year and I cant go to Michigan mid-week due to work.

SO, I need to make sure she knows I am thinking about her, and get her something but flowers are so cliche.

I was thinking about getting a really soft cuddly teddy bear and some chocolates along with a note and sending that but not sure if it is a good idea or not?

Do any of you DU ladies have any good ideas for me?

4. Christmas cost me
500 bucks, I got her an iPod nano with engraving on the back and a necklace, and put some of her favorite jazz albums on the iPod. SO I think thats a good price range.

her interests are politics, sailing, outdoors, camping, shopping (LOL) me (YAY) Music (jazz and classical) and girl interests I guess, what are you girls interested in?

lol.

6. you did spoil her for Christmas! lol
I think you're on the right track in terms of wanting to give something unique. Sending a 10-15 minute video of yourself would be fun...especially if it was you documenting your hunt for the perfect Vday gift. The funnier the better. So if you do get her a teddy bear (or whatever you decide on) then she could receive that and the video at the same time.

2. You can send anything through Amazon.com.
Gift wrapped and everything. Since she's in school, you could send her some things that would help her relax. A basket of bath things and some roses, because she works so hard and deserves to take care of herself. . . or something.

Regular shipping is still pretty reliable too.

ten ways to say i love you by william shakespeare

Not sure what to say when it comes to the language of love? Why not rely on the master bard himself? Combining swoon-worthy poetry with equally swoon-worthy chocolates, our "book" of love opens to reveal ten boxes filled with decadently rich chocolate truffles. Each box features an Elizabethan design and a different love quote from one of Shakespeare's plays. So, you can tell your sweetheart, "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind" or "I would not wish any companion in the world but you," and know that the words will always be just right.

11. Personally I would rather have the flowers - or an exotic plant like an orchid.
Cliche they may be, but so nice to brighten a winter day and not fattening either.

A real hand written letter could be special as well.

Edited on Sun Jan-28-07 01:17 PM by jasonc
Of that there is no doubt.

She does love chocolate though.

How does this sound:

Flowers
+
Teddy Bear
+
Chocolates
+
a hand Written Note

15. Flowers are cliche for a reason. We like to get them....
especially when we are grad students and a dozen red roses are delivered to our department.

Everyone gets to see our beautiful bouquet, and we get to relish the jealous gazes we get from other women.

Hey, I'm just being honest.

If you're completely against sending her flowers, check out this website:

www.pajamagram.com

That'd be the next best thing to receive--a beautiful giftbox with some lovely pajamas and a few other items in it. Check it out. :D

All women's pajamas, robes and slippers are delivered with FREE keepsake organza hatbox, lavender sachet, "Do Not Disturb" sign, and personalized gift card.

You can add little extras like bath roses, lotions and such.

And you can stick your own beautiful handwritten card in the mail, too.

It was a gift that was different from any other I received. That made it stand out by itself. That the pjs were beautiful & nicely packaged was a bonus.

17. Make her something yourself.
Food is good, but if you have some other talent, do that. Just make her something nice and send it. Even a very simple handmade gift is generally much more appreciated than a storebought one. If you're kind of inept in the kitchen department, just get some pre-made sugar cookie dough and some heart shaped cookie cutters, make some heart shaped cookies and decorate them with some icing, colored sugar, etc.

24. I agree with the flowers and chocolate...
Personally, I wouldn't want roses. But orchids (cut or potted) are beautiful. And Godiva chocolates. It's the one time of year women can eat chocolate without guilt. Perfume or bath & body stuff along with both of these would be my perfect gift. I love Victoria Secret's Heavenly. It's soft and sensuous.

Whatever you send, she's a lucky girl to have you! :)

If you're concerned about cliche...roses are the worst. You need to be a little more unique. Send her some exotic flowers...something different. The rest sounds good.

Red roses signify love. That will NOT be lost on your girlfriend.

Tulips are beautiful, too, but red roses say "I love you." A dozen say "I love you lots and lots." :D

36. Those tulips were gorgeous. Roses are lovely but
good luck finding the one that release that wonderful smell all over your room. Most roses these days are all show no fragrance. As GloriaSmith said above, make her a video too. After the flowers are dead, and the bear has been torn up by the (hopefully future) kids, she'll still have the video.

29. My favorite Valentine's day gift....
Was a simple, handwritten letter on nice stationary that talked about where we had been in our relationship on past Valentine's Days and where my guy hoped we would be for each of the next 50 Valentine's Days.

It clearly took a lot of thought and planning, and it was simply wonderful!

32. Ok, not a DU Lady, but I have a suggestion. It was relatively cheap, it was different, and her
co-workers were blown away. I forget where I originally heard about it, but I sent her a barbershop quartet. They came to her work, sang 3 or 4 songs, gave her a rose and a Valentine's card. They have a barbershop professional organization, so you can place an order pretty much anywhere in the country. My wife was blown away because she got 4 elderly gentlemen dressed with the red bowties and straw hats. They were really awesome, it ran 40 bucks and I just double checked and they are still the same price. They do this as a fundraiser for their organization.
