We're getting some new babies! (Warning ... cute pic!)
:bounce:

Meet Sunny and Sebastian. :loveya: They were rescued by a local group and we fell in love with them at first sight. We can't have them until we move into the new house, but we can visit them anytime we want meanwhile. :woohoo:

Come and get your doggy kisses here. :loveya: :*

1. Is the big one a Great Pyrenees or mix?
They are great friends to have.http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/story.asp?S=5974856

The little guy is a cutie too! You are one lucky Lady to have those guys in your life.

2. He's a Great Pyrenees.
He was very thin when I took the picture. He'll look more like himself once he gets some regular meals. I've read great things about the breed. He is really an awesome dog.

What a great story! Thanks for the link!

The little "guy" is a girl. She's very sweet! I can't wait till we can bring them home! :bounce:

10. Great Pyrenees are truly outstanding doggies. If we didn't have 3,000 square feet
of hardwood floors what would get destroyed by a big dog, we'd have one.

Or maybe a Newf.

12. So I've heard.
They both live outside now in a fenced area now. The rescue people tried to bring them inside, but Sebastian wouldn't have any part of it. We'll have 8 acres for them to run around in once we move and we're going to build a little barn for all the outdoor pets.

Newfs are cool, too! :bounce:

17. Thanks, Redstone.
I'm afraid we have "sucker" written all over our faces. When we moved here, we thought four indoor kitties were a LOT of pets. But then Sylvester came along and we met the rescue people. Then they ended up with five extra outdoor kittens that have special dietary requirements, so I agreed to take them once we move. The dogs will put us at an even dozen.

28. Great Pyrenees are not house dogs.
They are very common around here as protectors of livestock. They bond with the animals they stay with and protect them with their lives. They are great for sheep, goats & chickens.

52. Yes, they do.
They know me and they know where we're going to live. They're also extremely fussy about who they let their pets go to and they are very happy that I've agreed to take these dogs.

We're going to build a little barn-type building and fence it off, so it's not like they'll be roaming the world free with no shelter. And we won't be living close to a road. Really, there's no need to be concerned.

I'm shocked and I'm surprised other people on this board aren't. The only people I know of who kept their dogs outside had them taken away from them. Maybe it's a cultural thing--what part of the country do you live in? Is it warm where you are?

62. What does it has to do with culture????
The dogs are used to live outside, there are two of them together. MissAirmens isn't separating them. They will have a barn to go inside it the weather is bad. MissAirmens will be outside each day more than once communicating with them and take care of them? They won't be neglected.
There are a lot of dogs who live outside and aren't neglected. There are farm dogs or farm cats that never get to come inside.

And yes, I do know AirmensMom in person and I know she has a good heart for animals.

64. I know that many DUers feel the same way I do.
Why they're not speaking up, I don't know. I mentioned that it might be a cultural difference because, where I live, it just isn't done. In fact, it's considered inhumane. I realize that the Lounge is a place where people come together to bond, not to fight; but I just can't ignore this. I have absolutely nothing against the poster--I just care about the treatment of animals. If these posts of mine make me unpopular, so be it. I just can't be quiet for fear of rocking the boat.

80. I asked the Humane Society
to trap a feral cat that was hanging around my house so he could be neutered and treated for whatever he needed. They were useless. How humane is that? They were more than willing to leave that cat out there to make more homeless cats and suffer from whatever could have been ailing him. I had to find a real rescue organization on my own. Oh yeah, and the cat wasn't actually feral, just scared. He lives in the house now, but he's likely to move out to the barn when we move because he would much rather be outside. (We live too close to the road now.) He's a good mouser and would really like to get back to doing that. So, now that I've paid the bills to take care of him, is the Humane Society going to come over and take him away because he's outside ... and all of a sudden they care?

78. Working dogs are almost always kept outside. Dogs, like a GP, who
were bred to guard flocks or herd, sled dogs, and guard dogs, would be miserable living within the confines of a house. Most hunting dogs also are not house dogs. There is nothing 'cruel' about it. My 3 outside dogs (all gone after very long lives) each had their own dog house, a heated water bowl, and two had winter coats for extra warmth.

They've been with us for seven years. They are very low key and lazy. I let them out in our (fenced) backyard and take them for three walks a day.
Mostly, they like being area rugs.
I grew up with English Setters (hunting dogs) who also lived happily in the house.

79. How concerned are you?
How many pet rescue groups do you support, either with time or money? How many homeless pets have you adopted? How many feral cats have you trapped and taken in for neutering? How much food have you provided to the rescued animals? Do you really help, or are you just spouting off?

You sort of missed my point about moving to TN. In a suburban or urban setting, I would not have adopted a pet to keep outdoors. It's different in rural settings. The people here who have pets tend to have a house full as well as pets in the yard with an out building of some sort for them. The outdoor animals grow beautiful thick winter coats that keep them warm. They have beds, blankets, pet houses, heated water dishes, litter boxes, and toys. They are loved and well-fed and get cuddles and play time. You might not agree with this, but it beats being homeless, living in a small cage indefinitely, or put to death while still young and healthy. There are simply not enough good homes for every one of them to live in their master's bedrooms.

Some animals actually prefer to live outside and don't do well inside. It's wrong for us to anthropomorphize them, assuming they'll only be happy and well-cared for if they're in a human house with all the human furnishings.

91. Rural Tennessee here- My dogs run but are welcome inside.

I live in southern Middle Tennessee, my dogs are never leashed and have the run of the property. They usually WANT to be outside.
I would think that keeping a Great Pyrenees inside would be cruel. They are livestock dogs, they LIVE to stay outside with the heard and protect them from predators.

Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 07:58 AM by zanne
I dedicate a half a day a week there. I also build shelters for feral cats for another animal rescue group in my town. I supply the materials and build them for free. Any more questions?

By the way, the Great Pyrenee isn't the only dog you're adopting. That little short-haired dog won't fare as well as the Great Pyrenne outside. It's not only physical. They won't be part of the family if they're separated from you; they're pack animals who crave human companionship.

97. Good for you.
At least that tells me you're doing something to help. So I'm sure you're familiar with how hard it is to find good homes for the pets and how many are euthanized just because no one wants them. I am providing a good home to the animals. And I have 100% support of two different rescue groups, one here and one in CA, who know first-hand how well I care for my animals. There is no indoor home available to many of these pets, but there is a good, loving home with me. So my remaining questions are ... why are you so abrasive to someone who is doing everything possible to help the animals? Would you rather see them be separated and sent to an indoor home where they are left alone all day long with a bowl of cheap kibble to keep them company? Is that how you define a good home?

Look, I've tried to be civil through this whole thing, but I'm losing my patience. I don't need to answer to you and you don't need to agree with me. Please go bother someone else.

I was not implying they SHOULDN'T be an inside dog, just that there is nothing wrong with keeping them outside. Yes, they are great family dogs. They are protective of "their family" be it a flock of goats, chickens, cows or human beings.

104. They are a bit more versatile than your normal herding dog and are
in their element whether working on the farm or in the home. I think people need to realize that Great Pyrs do indeed make a great "suburban" addition. Hence my answer to your remarks. They adjust really well. Alex lived in a 1200 s.f. ranch with a 60x120 "field" to roam and was happy and content and lived quite long comparable to the 9-11 age range for GP's.

85. That's the dilemma!
If I let the dogs and the rest of the cats in, what happens when I get my horses? Do they have to come inside, too? Do they all have to sleep in the bedroom? If so, should I move out to the empty barn?

6. Yipee! We love babies!
My next door neighbor has a big dog like yours except it is a Polish Tatra Mountain Sheep dog. Has six toes on his hind paws. They were bred that way to navigate the mountains better.

Me, I like litte dogs (mini schnauzers).

I never heard of a Polish Tatra Mountain Sheep dog, but they sound very similar. Sebastian has extra toes on his hind paws, too.

I like little dogs, too. Sunny won't get very much bigger, but she is bigger than a mini schnauzer already. :D

We had a Golden Retriever for 13 years. He was just wonderful. But we wanted to wait until we had a bigger yard before getting another one. We didn't even go looking for dogs. I was just helping the rescue people do their chores when I met Sunny and Sebastian ... and they chose me! Harleydad didn't meet them until later, but he likes them both. :D

33. Nope.
The name just popped into my head. All our pets' names begin with the letter "S". My daughter pointed out 10 years ago, when we were thinking of what to name her new kitten, that all three of our favorite past and current pets coincidentally had "S" names. So she concluded that naming our pets with "S" names would make them better pets. She named the kitten Sophie and we continued it with the rest of the pets we got. Silly, I know.

93. Pets do find people,
not the other way around.

I think our cat was meant to come to us.

Eight years ago, my elderly neighbor came to talk to me. He was always an emotional person, and he was quite upset that day.

He told me that someone had left a large, closed cardboard box in their front yard. In the box he and his wife found a small blanket, a jar with dry animal food and a note that said, "1/2 cup" and a wonderful tabby cat with four white paws, a white bib and green eyes.

He was upset because he did not think they should keep the kitty. He and his wife had an elderly dog who did not like cats. And they were both in their eighties. Kitty had wonderful manners, he said.

I could not believe that I was hearing myself say we would take the cat. I did not know that I wanted a house cat.

Claudia is a joy. We all love her.

But what if she had bolted the minute they opened the box? What if they hadn't been home that day? What if I hated cats, or was allergic? What if I had bothered to consult the rest of the family before making this impulsive decision?

We got our beloved old dog, now deceased, in a similar way. She was a Lab puppy who belonged to some tenants who tied her outside and treated her very harshly. They were short on brains. When they wanted to get out of their lease, my husband said, okay, in exchange for the dog. We already had a dog. But I understood why my husband brought her home. It was meant to be. She was our dog for until she died at thirteen and a half years old.

I live in the country. I understand about keeping animals outside. Our current dog, and Claudia the cat, live inside. But we used to have a Sheltie who lived outside. He would never have wanted to be in the house. He had a doghouse. We also have quite a few barn cats. We treat them humanely and take good care of them.

I know many people who have outside pets. In the city it would not be right.

I do have to mention the stupid people who dump their unwanted pets in the country with the mistaken assumption that the animals will be all right. Most of them die. They get hit by vehicles, they starve, they are killed by wildlife. I have taken care of quite a few of the more lucky ones. Two or three dogs and the cats I have are quite enough.

105. Thanks for your post, murielm99.
I love your story and I'm glad Claudia found you. All of our pets have come to us through some coincidence. We have a standing joke that there's a "pets welcome" sign in the yard and a "sucker" sign on our backs, visible only to animals.

Many animals around here are kept outside and do just fine. It's just not as black and white as some would like to make it.

Yes, there are those stupid people. We have several pets that were dumped.

86. I'd love to have a GP. I adopted 2 American Eskies from rescue in 2004. I have a
Samoyed, that is diabetic, has hypothyroidism and Cushings' disease, and has both her eyes removed and prosthesises put in due to glaucoma. Criss will be 11 in 3 weeks and I spend much of my time taking care of her. I've had several Samoyeds before her. About 11 years ago, I adopted a Komondor from the local shelter. That old girl lived to be 14, which is rather rare for the breed. GPs and the Komondors are similar, in that they were bred to watch flocks and have booming voices! Good luck with your new 'kids'. Enjoy!

But it sounds like you have your hands pretty full right now. Criss is lucky to have found you. Many people would have given up on the health problems.

Komondors are gorgeous! Do you have any photos of yours? 14 is good for any large breed. Our Golden Retriever lived to be 13.

I have not heard Sebastian's booming voice yet. I guess I'll just have to trust that he has one. He would rather cuddle than bark. Sunny, on the other hand ....

Thank you very much. I expect there will be an update at some point. :hi:

Absolutely beautiful!!!

We had one "adopt" us while we were living in Conway. He was amazing....would just come over to the house and lay in front of the back door. I miss him..such a sweet baby.

BTW, all of the dogs that we have had have lived outside. They really prefer the room to be able to run, romp and play. We've always brought them in when the weather has gotten sour though.

Kudos to you for taking in the little loves. I am sure they will have a wonderful time in their new digs. :)
