I need a drink. The primaries are going to be even scarier than they were four years ago.

6. Well, I said we could applaud someone's work for the poor AND deplore their excessive lifestyle
At the same time, even. I guess in brief my love for Ted Kennedy's minimum wage fight and FDR's New Deal makes me an Objectivist acolyte because they were excessive, wasteful rich people.

2. Euthanizing the poor is consisten with the philosophy
of Ayn Rand. That or letting them drop dead on the streets because God knows, if they haven't the wherewithal to support themselves, they're better off as paving stones.

5. Hmmmm, did Ayn study the philosophy of Ebenezer Scrooge,
before the visit of the three spirits?

7. As an historical figure she reminds me of Mary Baker Eddy,
founder of the Christian Science Church. Her personal struggle and subsequent triumph appears to have blinded her to the fact that not everybody successfully rises to the challenge.

8. That's so bad when that happens.
That's why I CAN'T get mad at people like Edwards. Sure, he's got bucks, but he earned them, and he gives back, and doesn't forget those who haven't yet "made it".

23. Besides retaining simple human empathy
Edwards seems to know instinctively that the good of the tribe is essential to achieving the individual good, that there must be balance between the two. "Rising to the challenge" often involves not only character but luck, the random toin coss that conveys no information about the worthiness of the player. Further, worldly measures of "success" often have little to do with the complete worth of a person. One of the wisest men I ever met was this old black dude who was the custodian of the elementary school where my mon taught. I think Edwards gets all this.

I like Edwards for those reasons. I say this while noting that I remain staunchly uncommitted, at least for a time.

25. Exactly, Traveler.
Not all rich people are selfish bastards, and not all poor people are noble and kind. I don't know WHY so many people insist on demonizing everyone who is rich. It silly, and annoying, and very simplistic.

12. Such Compassionate Hedonistic Libertarianism
not that all libertarianism is hedonistic, or that I'm all against hedonism completely

I can't stand Ayn Rand and don't even know how to put her in a particular category, objectivism I believe she is place in.

I'm all for individualism, but I'm for helping people too...or I'd make a lousy social worker if I weren't I suppose.

4. Sure it is
Fighting to exploit them, fighting to keep them poor, fighting to eat their tasty babies...

Fighting for the improvement of their lives, not so much. How can you reach a state of ideal selfishness if others stubbornly insist on not starving so that you may feast?

27. well said. "fighting to eat their tasty babies"
It's just so sad the poor keep insisting on bothering the wealthy with their petty requests for food, houseing and minimal medical care. Aren't there workhouses? Don't we have homeless shelters?

13. Ya know
I have never been able to make it through any of her books. Boring drivel. I have become convinced no serious thinker retains an interest in Ayn Rand beyond puberty.

That being said, having flirted with Libertarianism long ago in my dark past, I do know something of Objectivism, I really don't understand the thesis ... that fighting for the poor is consistent with Randian "philosophy". Elucidate, please. Do you have a link, perhaps?

As for that drink, I think I'll have to join ya ... this is going to be weird ...

Thought it was a nicely reasoned and calmly sensible offering to the debate. Then of course it degenerated into a frothing GD flamefest.

(at least I think it was your thread - or a reply to a thread from you)

Yeah, if these are the things we're devouring each other over now, I'm not looking forward to the primaries. :scared:
