Please send some positive Lounge vibes.
Three years ago I had surgery to relieve symptoms of GERD. The surgery is known to be a temporary fix for most people and it appears that mine has begun to fail. At the best of times, this would be fairly devastating but in the middle of everything else that's going on I think I'm about an inch and a half from losing my grip. Any positive thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

1. I will send you some postive vibes dear crim son.
I will say to you as others said to me "hold on ..." - holding on is what has gotten me through a lot last year and especially last month. Holding on kept me here

4. I can relate to the GERD
but, didn't have the surgery. I, sometimes, suffer terribly with this.

Sending good thoughts your way. Nothing worse than having a health problem when your going through a tough time with your life. My doctor has told me that my GERD and acid reflux is exasperated when I'm stressing.

Hang in there!!!

5. I'm sorry you have suffered with GERD. I had it for six years
before finally getting the surgery and the pain and worry, not to mention the many tests and procedures, made me completely miserable. I also have other conditions which are controlled by meds that very much exacerbate the GERD symptoms so I am really screwn if something miraculous doesn't happen. Hugs, GenDem. I will send good vibes in your direction too!

12. Yuck
Have had bouts brought on by my own foolishness (drinking too much, eating late at night, etc) and it sucks. Very painful. Changing my bad habits made mine go away. (I used to research PPIs, and docs always said that some GERD sufferers bring it on themselves)

The docs also said that a lot of different medications also bring this on, and it's not like you can stop your meds like I could stop eating pizza at 10pm.

Good luck. I wish you better health this year, crim son.

7. If the doctors will authorize it, yes.
I have a bunch of other ailments and GERD is by far the most debilitating. I'm SO grateful to have had three good years! and if I could manage three more it would be worth the pain and recovery time for sure.

8. Does the procedure entail stretching the esophagus?
My GERD effects my ability to eat. The food will sometimes get stuck. It is very uncomfortable, and many times requires that I go induce vomiting. For me I tend to have more trouble with certain foods, like beef will set it off, but I have had a swallow of water get stuck, too.

Have they put you on Nexium? That works for me, but unfortunately my insurance company refuses to cover it, and I can't afford $125.00 a month for one prescription. They want me to take prilosec --which just doesn't work as well for me.

I've had mine for 19 years. It started immediately after my daughter was born. I swear it was the pushing.

I'm sending a truckload of good thoughts your way!!!!! :pals:

16. I've not had to have any dilations yet.
The surgery makes it difficult to eat, too, but it was so worth it compared with the GERD. I know how the Prilosec is fairly useless and for me the Nexium worked for about a year and then the acid broke through. I think right now I'm having esophageal spasms which makes it feel pretty shitty. Oh well!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the pushing... that makes perfect sense. In my case it seems to run in the family, this problem. The good news is that the new ph probe isn't attached to a tube that comes out your nose and coils around your ear, yippee! That test sucked rocks :(

Thanks for your good thoughts. I'm feeling better already. :pals:

19. Not right away. I'm going to wrestle with it for a while
because there are changes I could make that might help, like not eating :) On the one hand, I'm despondent. On the other, as I just posted, our realtor called and said we should expect an offer on our house. Whoa. I don't even have anywhere to go but man, if I got my own house you'd have to come up and celebrate with me.

37. Stay Away From Coffee
take your prilosec and your other ranatidine

try some gaviscon on top of that

stay away from alcohol

avoid hot spicy foods

elevate your head of the bed or prop yourself up on pillows

is this medical advice? No, it is common sense and the other stuff you already take.

sorry friend, I know it hurts

39. I am in the middle of making those adjustments.
A part of me is not accepting this situation! Because I didn't sleep much last night, I took a nap this afternoon and slept in a sitting position as I used to.

No hot and spicy foods? Bite your tongue! I'd rather have the esophageal cancer.

40. They won't suggest surgery unless nothing else works,
because it's not a long term cure and it supposedly doesn't reduce the risk of cancer. Whatever. At least I could eat pizza & that was fun while it lasted. Ah, listen to me. I'm going to fix this on my own without meds and screw the negativism.

Oh babe, you do have my sympathy ... have had acid reflux off and on for a few months now but it seems to be slowly subsiding. In my case, it was a matter of figuring out what foods to avoid, so I am fairly lucky. There have been times when the pain has been completely incapacitating, though never for more than a few minutes.

I hate it that you are having this kind of discomfort. That really sucks, but you really rock.
