1. Canned tomatoes. They're picked and canned when they're ripe.

5. Gotta drain them well. And a messy sandwich with good 'maters is better
than a polite sandwich without, yes?

16. You know, that is true.
It does cost a lot more to produce produce (ooh, that looks funny) during the off-season.

Production costs must be a lot less in MA, where tomatoes at my old grocery store are $1.79/lb.
(Snark not meant to be directed at you--food is routinely 50-100% more here than in my home state, and it makes me cranky!)

10. Fresh, from the produce section. I suppose those would be hothouse.
I always keep canned tomatoes around, though, so if I'm looking for diced to use in soup or sauce or hotdish, I'll use canned.

I like to use Roma tomato slices on pizza and in green salads because they hold their shape nicely.

For fresh tomato and mozzarella salad - I wait until summer.

11. We have a company from New Jersey who markets "ugly" (hydroponic) tomatoes
during the winter around here, and they're not bad. They cost the moon, but it's one of the few indulgences I allow myself.

We Americans are so damn spoiled, expecting to be able to buy fresh vegetables all year 'round, and then bitch about the immigrants who pick them for us...

13. I just get the ones on the vine
they taste better than the hothouse ones. They're pricier, though.

I'll often get Romas as well. :hi:

17. And a salad without tomatoes is like, well, something I can't think of right now
because I'm awfully tired, but it's like something, that's for sure.

Good night, m'dear.
