Consumer Reports: McDonald's Tops Starbucks In Coffee Taste Test

<snip>

When Consumer Reports magazine compared coffee from mega-chain Starbucks with java from three fast-food restaurants, the surprising winner was – McDonald’s.

The magazine had trained tasters sample a medium cup of black coffee from McDonald’s, Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, and found the best cup of joe under the golden arches.

McDonald’s coffee "beat the rest,” according to Consumer Reports. It was "decent and moderately strong. Although it lacked the subtle top notes needed to make it rise and shine, it had no flaws.”

3. Actually, if I had to pick between McD's and Starbucks, I'd go with
McD's too. I just don't like Starbucks coffee, never have. I like Dunkin Donuts as well. Burger King's coffee sucks, and has always sucked.

13. The new McD coffee is pretty good
I think the BK thing depends on the store. I had a remarkably fantastic cup of coffee from one but when I went back it wasn't as good.

18. We must have the same tastes in coffee. My only problem with McD's coffee is that they
only serve it 'warm' since the idiot sued for spilling hot coffee on himself.

29. Actually, if you research that
you'll find that before that "idiot" burned herself McDonalds had received a number of complaints, including from a hospital burn center, warning them that they were serving that coffee much too hot. They were serving it so hot because they wanted it to still be warm after 10 minutes. But that means it was so hot when served that it was causing serious burns.

4. They must not have tasted my local McDonalds
I tried the coffee once after they "made the switch". Never again. That stuff made Army coffee seem palatable. I swear it took a layer of enamel off my teeth.

8. Water quality has a lot to do with it
At work if we brew with tap water there are many "floaties" on top of the coffee and it truly does taste like swill. If we use H2O out of the cooler it has a much less harsh flavor. I'd assume the restaurant would soften their water, but that may not be enough.

And as long as I'm on the topic while I've never been just crazy enthused about Starbuck's I wonder which kind of coffee they tested--that Yukon blend is so earthy it's akin to plastering your mouth. I suppose in short there is quite a variation in blends/roasts.

(not that you brought it up, I just thought I'd say it here!) :)

12. I detest Starbucks coffee
I tried to get used to it for a while because they're a Blue company... but, I just could not get used to it.

McDonald's here in CT uses Paul Newman's coffee, and Newman is a long-time liberal... so, I wouldn't hesitate to drink it.

14. You know, I'd have to agree
I always wondered if McD's put a little sumpin' extra in their coffee, like a bit of sugar or something even if you didn't ask for it, because it has such a distinctive smooth taste and addictive quality. Plus it's not too heavy but on the other hand not too watery (which I can't stand). I can go for ages without drinking it, but the minute I do, I want more. So I suspect foul play.

Alas, I can't stand Starbucks regular coffee. It's very harsh and thick, like drinking syrup. Of course, tempered with 10 tons of flavored whatchamacallits and steamed milk and whipped cream--well, sure, THEN I like it! Don't like handing over $4 for the privilege, though.

McD's coffee??? I only drink that when I'm on the road and don't know when I'll get some Starbucks again.

I know Starbucks coffee is strong, but sheesh. (although I should say that I like my coffee strong. And black. No cream, no sugar, nothing. Except maybe a shot of espresso.) ~o)

Hi, my name is deepthought42, and I'm a coffee addict... :hi:

21. Starbucks coffee tastes like parts cleaner, but it's not as good
At work we're not allowed to use the kinds of parts cleaners that work because those are flammable, so we use a product called (this is no shit) OzzyJuice.

I was busily washing a part in OzzyJuice one day and got splashed in the mouth with it. (It is, according to the label, biodegradable, nontoxic, noncaustic and nonhazardous. It's also nonworking but we won't get into that.) I can attest that it tastes like shit, but less like shit than Starbucks coffee.

I love the OzzyJuice propaganda, though...they say mineral spirits doesn't clean your parts because it only dissolves the top layer of oil. But if you dissolve the top layer of oil enough times, which mineral spirits does, eventually you get down to the part.

No wonder people put all that syrup and soy milk crap in their Starbucks drinks--to disguise the taste of the coffee itself. *shudder*

42. Detest Starbucks too
not paying $4 for a cup of coffee, with all that shit in it, might as well drink a non-diet soda, less calories, sugar & no fat.

Myself, 24 oz. filtered water & 4 heaping coffee scoops of coffee & a bit of milk, just to color.

MMMM, good, strong & non-bitter coffee.

Consumer Reports also mentioned that your own brew is probably better than McD's, Starbucks, Burger King & Dunkin' Donuts.

Starbucks tastes like burnt oil, yuck.

I make a great cup of coffee anyway.

Good local coffee - Mayorga Coffee - Rockville, MD
ME Swing Coffee - Washington DC & Alexandria, VA

43. The article doesn't mention whether coffee was tasted from several random
locations or just one. I'm not one to defend Starbucks, but I think coffee taste can be influenced by the cleanliness of the equipment used to brew it, and of course, by the particular quality of bean or bean blend being brewed that day at any given franchise. If someone wasn't paying attention or slacking off, it could have skewed the results as well. Or if a franchise owner was cutting corners with inferior beans, etc., etc, etc...
