Fun in the snow: Sometimes you get lucky
So I had to drive down to Syracuse yesterday despite the lake effect snow storm and ended up moving at 25- 35 miles along 481 which normally runs around 70MPH. On the way back, I debated stopping at the grocery on Route 31. The worst weather on 481 is usually the 10 mile strip between Fulton and Route 31. As I told my daughter, you usually see cars off the road in the North bound lanes because people are still driving too fast when they hit the bad stuff. So, when we got to 31, the weather was bad and traffic was building up because it was the rush hour. I stopped to go to the grocery figuring 1. the weather couldn't get much worse even if it got dark and 2. I'd rather have fewer cars on the road with me.

When we got out of the store, the weather had cleared up. We drove about 5 miles nice and steady at about 30 MPH when all of a sudden I saw traffic backed up. It turned out that 481 was closed between Phoenix and Fulton because there were so many cars off the road. If I had gone ahead and tried to drive straight home, odds are I would have spent half the night in a snow drift! We took an alternate route and got home safe in clear weather.

I have to go out now and shovel the 15 inches of snow from behind my car so I can get out of the driveway!
