They have a large database of animals, races, performances, jockeys, owners and everything else besides, and many computer systems built on that database. I write and maintain their in-house software.

20. As in all things, there are bad options, good ones, better ones and best.

Best options are few and far between. I have a talent for programming and it is what I feel I am supposed to do. When I last lost my job, only one offer turned up, and it did so within a week of my leaving my previous employment. It seemed clear that this was where I was meant to go.

There is sufficient separation for my conscience not to be pricked. I am not actually working for a bookmaker, or a horse race owner. Some will disagree. I don't care. And those who think they lead pure ethical lives probably depend on unethical practices somewhere that they are unaware of. In our society it is nigh on impossible. You simply draw the line where you see fit.
