A new management low at my employer- RANT ON!
I was "e-mailed" 4 hours before I left that I am required to attend a "Safety and Quality class" which they have scheduled for my day off on Thursday. They said the class will last ten hours. I work 12 hour shifts/rotating days so this will effectively fall on my Sunday.
What kind of employer has so little respect for their people that they give such short notice? This is the THIRD time this month I had to come in on my day off for training. None of the Monday - Friday people have EVER had to attend a training class on their days off. The value of the training is dubious at best. BTW- I work on the machines, no subordinates, no desire to go ANY further in the company.
In the past six months they have made a RADICAL change in the demands they make of their employee's. Its almost as if I have died and this hell is my reward for the life I led when I was alive.

I decided to fight the man, I will not be attending. I replied to the email as follows "I will not be able to attend the class as I have a previously scheduled commitment. Had I had prior notice of this class I might have been able to attend."

This is a huge multinational company with 10's of thousands of employees worldwide. I am starting to think they are on a "reduction in force cheap" mode and trying to get people fed up enough to quit. I am already on that!

1. Wow, that sucks!
x(

But if you can find an employer that has respect for employees these days, drop me a line. Harleydad could use one. Respect for employees is so outdated, apparently. :( Don't give them the satisfaction of "reducing" you.

4. I am planning to "reduce myself", just not the time yet.
I was planning on working one more year so I can start the business debt free. I can't take it anymore working for a large corporation. I am just hoping they don't make my last year miserable.

2. Safety and Quality Class? Oh, groan.
This is a time for a large-capacity iPod!

3. Yup. They're trying to piss you off to the point where you quit...Oh, now wait a minute,
am I actually saying that management at a "huge multinational company" like yours can actually THINK?

Forget what I said. They're just being the same as all management at all "huge multinational companies" are, which is to say utterly oblivious.

Trust me, they're just too stupid to make it personal. They may not even notice that you're not at the class.

You say you "work on the machines?" I'd bet there are PLENTY of smaller companies who would be only too hapy to hire you (people who "work on the machines" are in damn short supply these days), and moreover to treat you like a human being after you've gone to work for them.

If you want to, PM me with info on what kinds of machines you work on. If they're CNCs, I could give you a list of companies in your area who I know use CNCs to make their products.

6. I am hoping my business idea works.....
I have already decided to leave them, working on a business plan. I want to stay with the company until the end of this year in order to pay off all personal debts. I want to at least try and see if I have what it takes to make my own way.

8. I've owned numerous businesses, and built several for other people. If you want to bounce
your business plan off me, I'd be only too happy to take a look at it. In complete confidentiality, of course.

I'm always happy to see someone striking out on his or her own. Anything I could do to assist or advise you, I would.

7. But safety and quality are worthwhile subjects
That said, 10 hours? They complain that our safety (personal and food) and quality (including an explanation of HACCP) is 2 hours long.
Personally, I'd like to attend some training classes. The company I work for now and the previous ones did no training classes except the above mentioned. When I went for job interviews, they asked about me attending company sponsored training classes and I said that I had none and they acted like that made me less qualified. I would also like to attend training classes, provided I am getting paid because sitting through them is a lot less stressful and difficult than my normal work.
It isn't nice though that they have been scheduling your training for your days off. You should ask your superviser if you are almost done with all your required training.
