I think it would be fun to have a vote on the best and worst movies of 2003. Post your nominations in this thread, and we'll have an official vote starting sometime tomorrow (Wednesday). Here's how it will work:

You can nominate as many or as few movies as you like, up to 10 each for best and worst.

The nominees must have been released to theaters in 2003.

Around Noon ET Wednesday, we'll count up the nominations. Ten nominees will be chosen for best movie, and ten nominees will be chosen for worst movie, based on total number of nominations for each film.

After the nominations have been tallied, I will post two polls for the best and worst movies of 2003.

As for worst, I don't pay for bad movies usually (I read reviews before hand). This year I didn't see anything really bad (although Tomb Raider 2 & X2 didn't really float my boat).

As an aside, The Weather Underground was a fine documentary which previewed this year at the Maine Int'l Film Festival...a darn good time!!!

I have no criteria by which I judge films. But I know what's good, and what's crap. "POTC" was a movie I saw 3 or 4 times in the theater. It was no "Citizen Kane" but it was very enjoyable and didn't insult my intelligence. "Kill Bill" was given the top honor because, well, it was the best thing I saw all year.

And I don't see bad movies, unless they're on TV or someone else is watching them. In which case I'd have to say the "Lizzie MacGuire" movie, which was one of the worst things I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing.

That movie was great. Plus, it was the last one I saw at my favorite movie theater before it closed down. (It was my favorite because it was the cheapest)

As for worst, well...

I disliked the Matrix quite a bit. Of course, sci-fi's not really my thing, but even so this movie stunk.

I've seen Bend it Like Beckham about 15 times (two soccer playing daughters) and still love every minute of it and want to watch through to the end. My girls got a real lesson in tolerance and the abiding love of family. Plus, they were spurred to learn about Sikhism. Fun for the whole family, and they made friends with the Sikh girl who works at 7-11 by chatting her up about her background (it's absolutely her FAVORITE MOVIE ever). Really liked the cooking lesson afterwards, too. Aloo Gobi is now a family favorite.

Also loved and have recommended A Mighty Wind to anyone who will listen.

I don't really have any nominations for worst. I saw very few films in 2003 and have also learned to be more discretionary in what I waste my film monies on due to the VAST amounts of utter crap that's pumped out each year. (But that's a whole other thread, so...)

I'll admit, though, after waiting 11 years I lost my desire and waited another 6 months before renting the video because I suddenly found myself despising Arnold when he ran for governator.

I was completely into it from start to finish, as were the audience and three people I went with. I actually prefer a slightly slower pace in horror movie. I believe American film has ruined the genre with overly frenetic flash cuts and really bad music video techniques; the emphasis on gore and jump scares, rather than plot and artistry.

Ethereal and incredible if only because the entire movie was a single shot. There was NO editing, no scenes, no TAKE two. Because of the immediacy of the film, I think you got a very different experience from the film.

If you are going to miss only one movie in 2003 than Daredevil is that movie. It does not get much worse than that.

1.) Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
This final installment solidified LOTR as the undisputed holy grail of fantasy epics. From start to finish, ROTK is cinematic perfection. There is so much to be praised about the cast, score, special effects, directing, etc. Indeed, each stands on its own as a miraculous achievement. The Lord of the Rings trilogy will come to be regarded as the dramatic event of the decade, and righthly so.

2.) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
This film did a great job of dramatizing thought; making strategy and discovery entertaining. Crowe was amazing, as usual.

3.) Lost in Translation
Murray and Johansson were magnificent-they gave us a complex, emotional drama disguised as a simple story inside a Japanese hotel.

4.) Camp
Take away the music and you've got a mediocre movie. But the music's there. And it blew me away. (Many theatres didn't get Camp; it circulated in film festivals during the summer, and will probably be out on DVD soon)

5.) Whale Rider
Keisha Castle-Hughes (age 13?) should be nominated for best actress at the Oscars. This film was one of the best-directed of the year (the plot is void of any complexity, but keeps your focus throughout)

6.) Matrix Reloaded
This movie should have included the final parts of Matrix Revolutions, and just been one final sequel, but studio executives like to string things out as long as people are willing to pay. The special effects raised the bar yet again for science-fiction films; the highway chase was the best action sequence of the year.

7.) Love Actually
This film demonstrated that romanic comedies can be both romantic, funny, and touching without insulting your intelligence. The performances were amazing-2nd only to ROTK in acting.

8.) School of Rock
Jack Black has yet to make a film that I haven't liked. The story uses an old formula (outsider thrust into position of authority over youth) but invigorates it with his unique wit and love of rock-n-roll. The kids all gave excellent performances.

9.) 28 Days Later
This was the best horror film of the year; though not saying much-it provided lots of chills and eerie moments. The last 10 minutes were superb.

10.) The Last Samurai
Tom Cruise was a believable Samurai warrior in this epic. The dialogue got a little cheesy at times, but the story was solid, and the battle scenes very exciting.


Worst

1.) Uptown Girls
A festering, sick, giant load of crap that I was forced to watched on video. Brittany Murphy turned in the worst performance of her career-so you know it's bad.

2.) Bruce Almighty
Not a single laugh in this "comedy." The script sucked-poor Carey, Anniston and Freeman should have knew better.

3.) Seabiscuit
This is the most overrated movie of the year, and one of the worst historical dramas I've ever seen. Every camera trick was obvious, and the voice-over narration was pitiful. The dialogue was atrocious. From A-Z this movie sucked.

4.) Phone Booth
You know the movie's bad when the audience WANTS the sniper to shoot Colin Ferrell in the phone booth, so we can leave the theatre. Bad. Bad. Bad. All around BAAAAD Movie.

5.) Legally Blonde 2
This was a horrific experience that no serious film-goer should have to subject themselves to.

6.) Cabin Fever
This film had potential, and some interesting moments, but the plot got real old real quick, and the actors became a little annoying.

7.) Bad Boyz II
Nothing at all exciting in this one. Nothing new either. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence still suck at acting, and still suck at making movies.

is one of the best films I've ever seen. I don't think it's getting that many nominations here because it's kind of an independent film and is in limited release, but I encourage EVERYONE to see it - it's wonderful. I haven't seen nearly as many this year as usual so I can only comment on what I have seen so far:

Some of the 2002-3 movies I waw this year (no particular order):

BEST:

"Catch Me If You Can" (I know, it came out in '02, but I saw it last January). I was looking forward to this one, since I read the book years ago, and loved it. The movie isn't quite the same, but for an adaptation, it was pretty good.

"Finding Nemo" - I'm a sucker for this stuff. I liked the "mine" birds. Albert Brooks was hilarious playing it straight.

MOST DISAPPOINTING:

"Matrix Revolutions" (I liked "Reloaded". Not great, but it grows on you.)

MOST DISGUSTING:

"American Wedding" (Cruder than the first two put together. See the unrated DVD for the full effect :puke: Funny in parts.)

80. Worst: "Gods and Generals;" "Nemesis" Best: None

"Gods and Generals" was a terrible movie, and a terrible disappointment. So much material to work with, and such an execrable result. "Star Trek" is now finished, and it is, sadly, time. "Seabiscuit" and "Master and Commander" were enjoyable, but hardly great, movies. "LOTR - Return of the King" was a disappointment (sorry). Slow start, interminable ending. Pacing just wasn't there. Certainly not bad, just disappointing.
