Should I take my 6 yr old to see Seabiscuit?
For those of you who have seen it, I'm seeking opinions.

I've heard good stuff about it, but I did notice it is a PG13 rating. My daughter LOVES horses and I'd like to take her to see it as long as it isn't gonna be too much for her...

Why did it get the PG13? Any ideas?

Laura

1. I'm taking the kids.
Brooke is 6, Brett is 8 and Emily 12....I think it will be good. I heard Seabiscuit was a democrat.....

2. I haven't seen it either....
But I do know from reading a review the horse doesn't show up in the film until 50 minutes into it. THat could be a little long for a six year old's attention span.
I think the violence would be limited to McGuire's charachter's career as a boxer.
If you want to get her a great movie that features the horse throughout you might check out The Black Stallion from your local video store. Great movie and as I remember I saw it about the same age as your daughter. I believe it was either rated G or PG.

3. Yes - Absolutely
It's a lovely movie, no sex, no drugs, no violence

4. I think it is one of the better movies
in a long time. I don't directly remeber any excessive violence though there are a few scenes in a Mexican bordello, very tame though and not excessive.

Overall, it protrays an intersting period in American History and is quite inpirational.

If the kids are expecting an action flick, they may get bored though as the target audience is grown ups.

5. I suppose it depends on their maturity
PG-13 for language, a scene where a young boy loses his life in a driving accident, and a somewhat gruesome riding accident.

(I don't think I gave anything away...)

So it's a marvelous movie, probably will win some Oscars; it's long (2 1/2 hours plus) and the racing scenes are the best I've ever seen in a movie.

That help you any?

6. It may bore her
Well, there's no nudity, the language is pretty tame. The sexual situations are so mild a child will have no idea what's going on. And the violence is nothing; "Finding Nemo" has more violence.
But I wonder if a 6 year old will be able to sit still through the first Seabuscuit-free hour that feels like a documentary. And it's not completely about the horse. It's about the redemption of the three human protagonists. But I don't really know. Your daughter may absolutely love it.

7. Might be too slow-moving for that young a kid
Depends on her attention span, but I'd think a kid that young would probably be pretty bored by most of it.

8. Makes ME want to see it!!
Everybody seems to like it, but it sounds like it might be a bit too long for her. She was fine with Spy Kids and Finding Nemo, but this might not be able to hold her attention when the horse isn't on screen... She's a movie lover, but this one may have to wait for video so we can stop and start it.

I HATE getting up in the middle of a good movie to do a bathroom run because she's bored. She figured out a long time ago that Mom won't argue about a bathroom run... :)

Thanks for the feedback, all. For those of you who do take your kids this weekend, let me know how you get along--there's always next week!
