46. SPECIAL NOTE FOR ANYONE FLYING OR DRIVING TO SAN DIEGO

Please pardon our smoky aroma and do not be alarmed. There probably is NOT a fire in progress; you are smelling fallout from the autumn backcountry blazes.

We who live here are accustomed to and generally not aware of it, having been breathing it constantly since late October. My mom and I got a big whiff of it while driving down from Ventura County last Saturday, so I'm sure any out of town visitors this weekend will be graced with an atmospheric ambience reminiscent of a well-used fire ring on one of our fine beaches.

We have a slight offshore breeze this morning, so any cars parked outside are covered with a thin layer of brown ash and dust. I'm going to spend the day planting flowers and drought-tolerant perenniels. I look forward to meeting some of you this evening. I'll bring along an amusing friend who does not partake of the forums.
