Fannie May & Fanny Farmer...
CHILL WIND

It was a sad, cruel announcement yesterday that seemed doubly sad because of the bitter weather:

625 employees will lose their jobs when Fannie May and Fanny Farmer stores and the West Loop candy factory close.

The new owner of Archibald Candy Corp. "is expected to manufacture Fannie May and Fanny Farmer sweets elsewhere," says the story.

Gee, you think they're going to Mexico, like Brach's Confections Inc did?

That company, "founded in 1904, completed the shutdown its West Side plant last week, laying off the last of what was once more than 3,500 employees."

Oh well. At least candy will be cheaper now for the unemployed.

1. I always figured that Fannie Mae was a mob front
We had a store where I grew up. Every time we drove by, whatever time of day, they were open, but had no customers. There's a store near one of the malls I shop at, and the same thing.

2. Funny you should mention Brach's
I worked at a Brach's plant here in Davenport, IA for almost 19 years when they announced that they were shutting the plant down. They said they were moving the operations to Tennessee, where they had another plant. Later we found out they were lying about that, indeed they were heading for Mexico. The ironic thing about the timing of the announcement? It was made on the day our Christmas party was scheduled to take place and nine days before Christmas to boot. Good luck to the Fannie May and Fanny Farmer ex employees.
