Pete Rose still doesn't come clean -- Still lacks respect for baseball
First, who here really believes that the guy didn't begin to bet on baseball in 1987, as he now claims? I don't believe that for a minute. He is only "admitting" his actions from 1987 on because they've been proven by investigators. He will never come clean on anything unless its already been proven by others.

Second, it appears that he continues to lie when he says that he didn't bet from the clubhouse.

Gambler Says Pete Rose Bet From Clubhouse

TIM REYNOLDS
Associated Press

MIAMI - One of Pete Rose's former gambling associates disputes the career hit leader's claim that he never bet on baseball from the Cincinnati Reds' clubhouse.

Thomas Gioiosa, who once lived in Rose's Cincinnati home and now owns a health-supplement store in Ormond Beach, Fla., said in a telephone interview Tuesday that he often saw Rose wager on baseball before games.

"I was there, and we did it every day," Gioiosa said.

Sorry, but this guy is every bit as credible as Rose. Probably more so.

Peter Gammons says all that needs to be said, in my opinion.

Rose shows lack of respect

By Peter Gammons
Special to ESPN.com

"First, in betting on baseball as manager -- a position that demands standards higher than those for players -- Rose demonstrated a complete lack of respect or caring for the game.

Then came this week. Turning around on Bart Giamatti? Despicable.

Also, the fact that he has orchestrated the release of his book and his admission of guilt at a time when Dennis Eckersley and Paul Molitor -- two great people who overcame a lot, which Rose hasn't yet -- are being elected is a bold statement that he has no respect for Cooperstown, and that he wants to be in the Hall for one reason -- to make money to feed his addictions.

This is a man who admitted something in a forum in which he can make money. He has no remorse, no respect for anything but his next bet. Rose is perhaps the lowest figure in baseball in my 32 years of covering the sport.

It's clear that Rose has not changed one bit. He has done nothing but dig himself into an even bigger hole.

1. How can you respect a league that is run by Bud Selig
Who's only interest is lining the pockets of the owners since he was an owner and still has interests in his Milwaukee Brewers

2. I don't respect Bud Selig --
I also think you've overstated your critique of the man. Further, that has nothing to do with Rose.

3. No, I don't blame him for Rose, I blame him for ruining MLB
When he steps down and is replaced by someone who isn't soully interested in the profits of the owners then I'll start watching the sport again.

5. Why not start a Bud Selig thread, then? --
Why bring it up in a conversation about Rose?

4. Peter Gammons WENT OFF!!!
"And until Pete Rose proves to me that he cares about something other than Pete Rose, he does not have my vote. "

"As far as I'm concerned, Rose can go to Cooperstown and sign tawdry items for those who, like him, have no respect for integrity, baseball or the Hall of Fame."

From your link. :-)

6. I'm With You
Rose is a twit and the only reason why this admission is being made is that it will sell books.

He just doesn't get it. It's that simple.

7. Gammons is dead on
Rose shouldn't be allowed back in baseball. It is plain and simple. He has no respect for the game and only does what is in the best interest of himself.

8. I can live long and comfortably
Without hearing about Pete Rose.

The only thing equal to his dishonesty is his massive ego.

9. Rose previously swore that he had never bet on the Reds
now he admits that he did. Nothing Pete can do know would warrant his place in the Hall of Fame. He gambled on games in which he had a direct outcome. Its as bad as the rampant steroid abuse that no one seems to care about.

11. Pete Rose's mistake was lying about it
Because Baseball's holier-than-thou opposition to gambling is just stupid. He should have come clean and admitted what he did. Does anybody think Pete Rose threw a game? Of course not. So why is what he does on his own time the business of anybody but himself?

12. Sorry, Mobuto. We Couldn't Disagree More
I don't see it as holier than thou. I also don't hold your confidence that Rose wouldn't have done something untoward. I wouldn't trust that guy to watch my garbage cans.

15. I don't trust the guy either.
But unless his actions off the field directly impacted his performance as baseball player, his employer shouldn't have any business questioning them. That's a line I maintain for all jobs, whether we're talking about a Walmart employee smoking marijuana on the weekends or the President of the United States receiving oral sex from a paramour. Pete Rose was paid to play baseball, and play baseball he did. The rest is incidental.

17. His actions did affect his performance --
He bet on his own team! As manager, that definitely creates consequences for on field choices. He might play certain players in order to win a game he bet on, despite the long-term effects that such decisions might play on the team's chances for the long season. Further, when Rose didn't bet on his team, his bookie knew better than to take bets against the Reds from others. Any way you look at it, it's no different than insider trading.

13. Berry, berry interesting --
That "holier-than-thou" stance is taken by every pro sport, with very good reason.

What's more, Rose is still lying about it!

16. Yes,
and pro-sports use it mainly to intimidate players and suppress the players' union.

What's more, Rose is still lying about it!

I don't care about Pete Rose. If you want to disqualify him from the Hall of Fame for being a dishonest, seedy scumbag, that's one thing. But the man sold tickets, and played at his best.

18. Give me a break --
The rule about no gambling has been around much longer than players unions. And no league has used it to suppress any players union. That is simply a disingenuous statement on your part. Further, Rose's play does not erase the damage he did and continues to do to the game.

14. This one makes some great points --

Pete Rose Has Fouled Out for Good

But know this: As soon as you walk into any locker room in major league baseball and look at the door that just shut behind you, you will see a notice that gambling is banned.

Yet, from his manager's office, Rose called his bookmaker — who knows how many times? — to place a bet on his team. Rose claims his situation is not like the Black Sox or any other fixing scandal because he never bet against the Reds.
But of course, in a way, he did.

If he bet his team one day and not the next, then any self-respecting bookie or gambler might figure out that Rose didn't believe his team could win that day.

19. Bingo! This point was made on the News Hour last night.
Unintended consequences. Which is one reason I suppose they have a no gambling rule in place. Sadly both of the guys being interviewed thought Rose would "someday" make the Hall of Fame. That is just so bad. And the clip of Rose showed what looked like to me a petulent, immature whiner.
