50 WAYS TO LOSE 10 LBS.
By JULIE UPTON

The No. 1 rule for long-lasting weight loss: Don't diet.

Diets, researchers find, don't last a lifetime - which is why most dieters regain any weight they manage to lose.

In fact, research shows that dieters tend to gain more weight in the long run than those who don't follow any weight-loss regimes.

Why? For starters, dieting can lead to feelings of deprivation, which triggers binge eating in many people. That can lead to feelings of failure and low self-esteem, which derail future attempts at weight loss.

Weight-loss experts agree that the only way to win the war against fat is to develop simple changes in how we eat - and increase the activity in our daily lives.

Since a pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, if you burn 100 calories a day or eat 100 fewer calories, you'll find yourself 10 pounds lighter this time next year.

Here, courtesy of the experts, are 50 painless ways to cut those calories and lose those pounds.

3. This article is such bullshit
Because it says don't diet, and then it lists 50 f*cking diet tips. Turn your back on a buffet to save extra calories? Excuse me - that's dieting.

Buddha has the best advise for attaining your natural weight. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full.

7. Buddha certainly appears pleasantly plump in the statues
but in various times, having some fat on your body has been considered attractive, and healthy. And in current times, article after article has been emerging with the facts that you have fat on your body and be in great health as well as be active and the attractive issue is evolving all the time.

11. The Fat Buddha statues often seen in restaurants
aren't the Buddha at all. That's either Hotei or Mi Fu. Buddha is normally shown in a meditative position.

8. difference between diet and lifestyle change
That's essentially the problem - yes, all the things listed could be considered being on a "diet," IF you stop doing them as soon as you lose the 10 lbs. Then right back up you go! It's not that you should turn your back on the buffet table until you're at the weight you want, it's that you should turn your back on the buffet table PERIOD. People seem to think they can get thin and then return to the lifestyle that got them fat in the first place, as if it's not going to do the same exact thing all over again.

And by the way, it takes your body about 20 minutes to realize it's full. If you wait until you feel full to stop eating you've already eaten too much.

9. you have to take your cues from listening to your body
which you have to learn from being aware over time. By full I don't mean til your pants are about to burst. by full I mean no longer physically hungry, when you body tells you you've had enough.

As for the buffet - doesn't that depend on a) what's on the buffet b) are you somewhere where a buffet is the source of food.

If you think a buffet is an open invitation to gourge yourself on everything endless because it's there and no one is imposing a limit on you - then yeah, you might want to think about that behavior.

What the hell is wrong with choosing foods from a buffet that you know will nourish you, satisfy you.

The moment someone tells you - don't do this, you shouldn't do that, just walk away and don't even look at it because it will melt your eyes in their sockets - there's an inner part in everyone who says fuck you - and you'll end up at the buffet doing the exact behavior you were trying to avoid in the first place.

16. I agree...
...but I think you may be going overboard on the buffet thing. Use some common sense - if it's the meal at a dinner, have your one serving and THEN turn your back on it. The problem is most people DO gourge themselves on whatever's put out at parties. That's why they need to lose weight and are reading this article, and I think removing the food from your line of sight is probably a good tactic. I don't see what the big deal is.

And if people are going to get all resentful when you tell them do this/don't do this, why are they even bothering to read an article titled 50 ways to lose 10 lbs? Presumabely it's a list of dos/don'ts, after all. Whose fault is it if they don't like what they hear?

17. I'm talking about a very subtle psychological phenomenon
that occurs with people who have food and weight issues.

On a primal level, food is connected to our very existence. While on one level we seek out help in managing our compulsions - trying to control the power food has over us, there's also a part of us that rebels against anyone trying to control or exert influence over what we eat.

And that's a big reason why diets don't work.

The goal would be to reach a state where you can look at a buffet of all kinds of food, and if you're not hungry, it's the same as looking at a pile of rocks. If you are hungry, you take what you know your body needs and walk away, not because you have to, but because you want to. To live feeling like food is such a source of conflict and struggle is a very painful way to live.

18. the same people who stuff their faces with cheesecakes
then say "It's genetic". Cutting 100 calories is nothing out of 2000 -2500+ calorie day. Yet, some people rather complain and find excuses.

have alot more to worry about than cutting 100 calories out of their day.

Cutting 100 calories a day would be like putting a bandaid on a hemoraging gash. My critism of the article is the writer seems to be jumping on the "don't diet" band wagon, then retreads 50 dieting cliche's. It's like Dr. Phil telling people not to diet, then selling diet bars.

There are so many great people out there writing great books about how to overcome compulsive eating who have zero affiliations to packaged diet foods, weight loss gyms, expensive programs - all of which push a diet agenda because why? Because it guarantees you'll keep losing and gaining, losing and gaining, and paying more and more money.

But those voices sound a little radical, perhaps require more indepth long term work, and are a danger to the status quo.
