Fortunately, I've managed to keep a cool head about such things. In the past I've quit jobs that weren't working out... but ONLY after making other arrangements for a new job (and actually being HIRED) before informing my superiors that I'm resigning.

And even then, my resignation letter was "generic" and simply informed them of my decision and the dates. Even though I loathed the job and the boss, I followed up with "thanks for the opportunity to work with your firm.... blah-blah-blah." (Why make enemies? Why burn bridges? I figured need a good reference from them someday... and I was correct.)

As I've gotten older I have managed to control the impulse though. Damn responsibilities!

2. Oh yes. But I've resigned both ways, impulsively and calculated.

I once impulsively quit a job, not for something that transpired directly, but rather for something that happened to my manager.

I figured if the owner could do something so unfair, so callous to the person who was on the next rung of the ladder above me, that I obviously had no future there.

So I walked into the owner's office, 10 minutes after realizing this, and quit on the spot.

It all worked out. A week later I started working for a company that was awarded a contract to do some work for NASA. I became the Project Manager for that work and was eventually hired by NASA. All's well that ends well.

I've quit several jobs impulsively, always with good results.

4. Once

I was working for the county tax assessor, appraising properties for the quadrennial reassessment. A farmer ran me off his land at gunpoint. As soon as I made it back to my car (and my knees quit shaking), I drove straight back to the office, gave my boss the "life is too goddamn short for this kind of shit/take this job and shove it" speech, and went home. And fixed a drink.

He called the next day to see if I would take a supervisor's position with an increase in pay and NO outside work. Well, yeah.

6. I never did, but my first wife...

...got fed up with the nonsense at the burger place where she was working and cussed out her boss right in front of everybody and then climbed right over the counter and walked out the front door. She always had a flair for the dramatic. :) She said that one of the customers responded with, "Oh HELL yeah!"

8. Sort of, almost

When I was 16 and working part time in a grocery store, I had an occasion where the manager unjustly (in my mind) yelled at me for something. I fumed for a couple of hours, then told the assistant mgr I was turning in my notice. He convinced me to stay on.

9. That describes how I retired

I just couldn't take the insanity any more. Thirty-five years was enough. Thank God for 401-k's and ESOP's. I worked for one of the largest telecom co's. The company had good intentions but local management would have made the Keystone Cops look good. They were out of control.

10. When told to do something illegal, dangerous, and a public safety hazard

I was out the door in less than 3 minutes. This company was very fond of working their employees long hours. Fifteen hour days...day after day....for weeks.

I was given an assignment that I was too tired to do safely(drive a truck pulling two trailers from Indy to Chicago and back/winter weather conditions). I told them I was too tired because of the previous 17 hour(illegal!)work day. They told me they didn't have anyone else...that I HAD to do it.

I said "well if that's the case then I guess I have to quit" ....by the time I was out the door they found someone else to do the job.

I was single with little kids to support. My boss thought he could verbally abuse me and make jokes at my expense. I waited for the right moment when he needed my expertise. His office was full with high level executives negotiating a big deal. I made sure that I controlled all the information to be presented at the meeting. He called me for the information and I handed him my letter of "I quit as of Right now." He blew his stack and called me every name in the book. I walked out with his million dollar contract under my arm, and placed it in the burn-barrel by the security office. Hope the guy died of some dreadful desease.

My life and my children's was sooooo ever sweet forever.

12. Yep, Right after she called me a stupid slut...

When I objected to her terminology she had her son Virgil (the brain dead weightlifter) come and loom over me so I'd back down. At that point I raised my volume a lot more and told her she could get f*&%ed and she better never expect grandkids 'cause poor ole Virgil looked like he'd shriveled his nuts with too many steroids.

They overheard me three offices down, and I actually got a thumbs up from a couple people as I stomped out.

In spite of her threats, I was working for her competition in less than a week.

13. Oh yes and I did not have another job

lined up. BUT I did know about a temp agency who placed claims processors/examiners with insurance companies. After a few days of R & R I went to the temp agency and after completing their tests was sent on a couple assignments. Those assignments led to full time employment.

I just quit the job I have now, not in disgust though. I have another job lined up. It sure is hard leaving people I like working with. That's the most difficult part.

14. YES. Walked out on a boss who was being an ASSHOLE. I'd just had

enough, and picked up my things and left.

He BEGGED me to come back, with a raise. I did, on the condition that he stop being such a dickhead, and he did.

We worked together for quite some time after that, lessons learned on both sides.

my supervisor had gone psycho she yelled and could be heard throughout the store made six employees cry.I called her a psycho bitch and was fired!!!!!

16. yes but I waited until the next day

and quit over the phone. The boss scheduled me when I requested off to take an AP test in high school. She did shit like that all the time because she hated high school students.

I did great on the test by the way and got 4 college credits for it which saved me more money than I earned working at that shitty grocery store.
