Finally! A major victory for me

Those of you who've had fussy babies will understand how thrilled I am. My 10 week old baby boy has finally fallen asleep on his own without me or the swing! Before now, the only way I could get him to nap was in my arms, nursing, or the swing. I think he's learning to put himself to sleep. There wasn't even any crying. I just noticed he was sleepy, laid him in the bassinet, and he drifted off to sleep. Ah, heaven...

The first 8 weeks were colic hell, and even since then he hasn't been sleeping on his own. Please cross your fingers for me that this isn't just a fluke.

1. It's a milestone...congrats!

Colic IS a drag..hope he has moved through it. Congrats on the baby, BTW.

When my friend's baby had colic, I would turn on the blow dryer and it would distract her from her discomfort. Getting adjusted to LIFE is a drag for some babies.

2. Colic is hell for sure!

My son started w/ it on week 3 and kept up w/ it for nearly 4 months. Then one day, it was as if someone had switched babies on me.... the crying just STOPPED.

16. And no one TELLS you colic is GAS. We discovered the joys of

simethicone (sp?) after weeks of agony... and like you said, it was like someone switched babies.

My baby was just 2 weeks old yesterday, now, she's 10 AND A HALF (as she puts it)... they grow so very, very fast.

3. We've done the hairdryer thing

It worked like a charm. Almost as if it were a "baby off" button. So, we bought a white noise machine from Brookstones. It doesn't work quite as quickly, but it helps keep sudden noises from disturbing him. I have it on right now. It sounds like a jet engine.

Edit: this was supposed to be in response to NSMA's post about hairdryer sound helping with colic.

It should start to get easier. A friend of mine had a colicky baby, she drove everyone nuts. But she is a fine, intelligent young woman, now.

but read Happiest Baby on the Block by M.D. Harvey Karp. Some strange sounding stuff in there but it worked like a charm for our little one...

9. Yes, that book is a God send

I think that is what kept the colic from lasting longer than 8 weeks. But, it doesn't seem to help as much with sleep, at least until now. He's too big for swaddling now, but that and the noise machine we did from reading that book, and it has helped tremendously.

12. we swaddled little miss until she was nearly three months

she was sleeping through the night at one month, though, with the help of the swaddling. We tried to 'free' her on more than one occasion, but she couldn't get to sleep 'unwrapped.' After three months or so swaddled, one day, my wife and I are working in the kitchen and little miss is lying on the floor in the living room (big plush carpet that we all love) and the next thing you know, she's out! From that day forward she has slept unswaddled.

To this day she seems very happy and I am convinced that some of the calming solutions in that book have helped her! Congrats on the sleeping and keep the faith...

10. Heh! Did they mention the clothes dryer?

Put fussy, grumpy, sleepy baby on top of clothes dryer, turn on dryer, baby will settle down & most likely go to sleep.

13. that's what my folks did for me

and of course, I would fall asleep in the car before we ever got out of the driveway...aparently leading to many late night drives. The only problem is that it has carried over to today...I still cannot stay awake as the passenger in a car!

My children had many, many swing naps. It was hard to get them down otherwise. Now they're great sleepers, though.

My children can't seem to fall asleep without mommy next to them until they're about 2 or 3. After that, life gets easier for sure.
