Ever Call Those "How's My Driving?" Toll-Free Numbers?
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 01:52 PM by arwalden
Have you ever called one of those "How's My Driving" telephone numbers? (I think it's 800-2-ADVISE or 800-4-SAFETY.)

Are those stickers a meaningless P.R. device? Does the big-boss at the home office actually get a report on how well her team of drivers are doing?

Does it encourage truck drivers to drive more safely or more courteously since they know that anyone can call in and complain?

Do they get a discount on their insurance if they agree to display the sticker?

Edit: Clarity, more descriptive subject, additional thoughts, spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization.

1. No, they're real numbers -- I've seen them used
One time I was travelling with some friends when a truck nearly ran us off the road. One of my friends was driving, and noticed that the truck had one of those numbers. He called up the number and, sure enough, got someone to talk to. He proceeded to report the truck.

I wonder if anybody calls in to give the drivers ? I mean, it could be something like, "I was in the city today, and I saw one of your vans parallel parking, #78046, and it was a complete work of art. I mean, he backed up, swung in, edged up a bit, and ended up completely equidistant from the cars in front and behind and a uniform three inches from the curb!"

2. i've called one
when i used to drive a CRX this friggin semi almost killed me, then he tailgated me for 1/2 mile. i called and told on him, the operator said i should call if i see a courteous driver since they get bonuses for "good behavior" trouble is, i rarely see a considerate trucker anymore.

3. Or "I'm calling because the trucker slowed down to let me change lanes...
... before I missed my exit."

People would rather complain than compliment. I know I'm guilty of that myself.

4. Not After My Aunt Made This Call:
"Hello? Hello there? Young man, is this 1-800-E-A-T-S-H-I-T? I'd like to report a VERY rude driver!"

5. I work in the transportation department of a national retailer....
and yup, those calls do get bumped all the way up to corporate AND acted on -- drivers get disciplined or fired because of those complaints!
