Anyone from Northern CA?
My lovely 18 year old daughter will be moving to Arcada/Eureka area soon. Will she be able to find a job? She has experience, she has waited tables and worked in the Office of the State Attorney General during her last year of high school. She is willing to do anything.

How is the job market in the area?

(Can you tell Mom is nervous?)

1. I think it is bleak.........
Northern CA job market is generally pretty grim. I'm in Sonoma county, and there are hardly any new jobs opening up. I think it is even worse up in the Arcata/Eureka area.

2. moi, Blue Lake, in the Eureka/Arcata area....
I don't know much about the job market actually-- I came here to accept a job and haven't looked elsewhere since-- but my sense is that it's mixed. If your daughter is looking for any particular kind of job she may or may not have difficulty. Is she a student at HSU? Many of my students have jobs, but since this is a university town in a beautiful area lots of people flow through and many want to stay, so the competition for really good jobs can be pretty fierce. In general, the Humboldt County economy is lackluster, but that's kind of deceptive because the county is large and very rural, but the Eureka/Arcata area is it's economic center. If you can provide any more specific information I'll be happy to try and answer. Use PM if you want to keep it private.

I'm running into Acata, but will be back in a bit.

3. I used to live in Chico
There's a college there.

This was in the middle 1980s, at the start of the high-tech boom. Unemployment was high. I worked at the local K-Mart, then at the Chico News and Review. (And it's still a fine paper, BTW.)

Right about now, I'd bet that unemployment is dire.

Just like everywhere else in George Bush's America.
