3. Freepers aren't watching
They have to be to work in the morning and get the oil in the fryers. Plus, the McCoffees don't make themselves.

10. I worked at Arby's
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 12:11 AM by sleebarker
and I am not a freeper.

Sorry for adding a sour note, but the main reason I hated myself and that place and why it drove me to the brink of real locked up in a padded cell insanity was people treating me like I was lower than shit just because I worked there. And actually the only "freeper" I met in my three years of working in fast food was one general manager.

14. Point well made, sleebarker! Welcome to DU
Glad to have you here, pointing out that progressives are too often guilty of assumptions and stereotyping people based on erroneous bigotry!

Happy to have you on board :hi: There are some of us who try to point out this sort of prejudice when it rears its ugly head around here. We could sure use help, as such vapid attempts at humor are really just bigotry and it hurts us all when we let it slide by unchallenged! It isn't just bad when the RW does it. We need to have our awareness shaken around here too. ;)

Gets annoying, doesn't it: the progressives who say they want to help the poor & working people, then make rude comments stereotyping people in jobs they have disdain for. Glad you stood up for people who are not in positions to be in good positions in our society. Dignity is NOT conferred by occupation. Dignity is a human thing.

28. I didn't say it was a bad job to have
I just said that freepers aren't watching because they have to get up in the morning to go to their jobs. Do you consider fast food jobs as demeaning? Maybe I meant because freepers are young and still living at home, maybe still in high school and fast food jobs is typical for teens. It's interesting how you jumped right to the conclusion that fast food jobs are bad.

Maybe you need to sit back and think about the way you automatically jump to judgments.

18. I don't treat fast food workers like shit
When I was in my 20s I caught some bad breaks and had to move back to my parent's for a little while, I'm not a freeper and I understand the "joke" behind the parent's basement dig.

Fast food jobs are great for teens, retirees, college kids and other people who want to make some extra cash on the side. Were you in your 30s or 40s working at Arby's?

And I didn't say all fast food workers are freepers, but I think you know that.

24. Well, that sucks
I have never worked in the fast food industry so i really don't know how they work. I should have never made the joke I did last night, but I thought people wouldn't take it as offensive. But then again, I have been here four years, so I should know better.

26. I didn't really take it badly. I just wanted to say that there are some
reasons (especially here in MI right now) why 40 year olds are working in fast food. We ordered pizza the other night and our delivery man looked to be around 45...his earnestness, his face...reminded me of my dad so much that I overtipped him and actually felt like crap. It saddens me to see proud people doing what they have to to get along. I'm just having a weepy week I guess. :hi:

My first "real" job was as a hostess at Bob's Big Boy. We've all been there and some of us choose to stay. Please don't take personally any negatives you read here, but do always speak up. :pals:

thank you for speaking out against left-wing bigotry.
We're supposed to be the party of inclusion.

I get really tired of hearing "trailer-park" bashing and the like.
Calling people "trash" is another one.
Hell, pretty soon that's going to be the only affordable housing
left in CA. and they're getting rid of the mobile home parks, too.

Welcome, again.

21. Exactly! I expected her to do that if she won. It's her partner and she
did what everyone else did. Why is it such a surprise or such a big deal? This is the DU. We're not supposed to be like the Right Wing and freak out when we see a same sex couple express affection are we?

22. who here freaking out over the expression of affection?
I think you've misread this thread.
I think the whole point of the thread is that it's encouraging to know that we have reached a point in our society that open public displays of affection are expected AND without repercussions. Think back just 10 years ago, if Etheridge had thanked her wife, the news headlines would be ablaze. I think it's an indication of how far we have come. We still have a ways to go, but it's a good sign.

like it's no big deal anymore. We don't have to always point out, "Hey, so and so expressed public affection!!!!!" ;)

it's a good thing that it's so blase now (some of our reactions, or rather non-reactions!) :D

36. By calling attention to it and creating a thread dedicated to it, it is
a "freak out". Are there any threads commenting on the heterosexual couples kissing when their Oscar was announced? No. If true equality of relationships is accepted, there is not a need to call attention to a same-sex couple expressing gratitude and affection when they win.

37. I think you are over reacting
I see this thread as an observation of how far we have come and yes, it's worthy of comment. It's akin to observing that a viable candidate for president is black. Neither observations are "freak outs," they are merely observations.
I think we all need to take a deep breath and stop looking for things that aren't there. That's how you encourage and give license to the "PC police" as they become ever more intrusive though/word gestapos.

I saw her at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA this past summer and she absolutely rocked. Of course, she did "I Need to Wake Up". Now I can say I saw the Oscar-winning Melissa Etheridge. I can't wait until she comes around this way again.
