Musicial acts people you admire like but you can't stand....
Over the years, there have been many acts that I can't stand, but yet people whose musical taste I admire love them. I have even come around on one or two (used to hate Springsteen, a friend talked me into going to see him concert, and I changed my mind about him entirely).

But there are others that people just love and I simply can't come around on. Here's a few:

Elvis Costello (He seems like a nice, funny guy, but that voice!)
Joni Mitchell (like nails on a chalkboard to me)
Sting (EW! I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him!)
Dave Matthews (I don't wonder how he got famous, but how he STAYED famous)
Bjork (loved in Dancer in the Dark - can't stand her music)
Tom Petty (what's to say? The voice? The face? Ugh)
Alanis Morrisette (whiny, and doesn't know what "ironic" means)

1. Dude, you need to mellow out
I don't think Alanis would be Alanis without that voice. I just really dig some of those sharp lyrics in her songs (not enough to go buy her music though). I don't really hate any of those artists, but some of them are definitely forgetable.

Of course there are some old-fart acts that I used to like but never want to hear again like Bob Segar, ELO, and Styx (cannot believe I ever liked Styx).

6. Ha ha, shows what you know!
Alanis used to go by just "Alanis" and not "Alanis Morissette" years and years ago -- before she broke the big time with "Jagged Little Pill," she used to be Canada's answer to Tiffany or one of those other teen-pop dance idols. She didn't have a sandpaper voice then, although she was still whiny!

Personally, people whom I admire like these bands/artists I can't stand:

The Grateful Dead
Joni Mitchell
Pink Floyd
Joan Baez
Led Zeppelin

and hordes and scads of less well-known folkies, all of whom I can't stand, some just on g.p....

2. alanis morrisette doesn't know the meaning of ironic?
she sings a song called isn't it ironic and gives many examples of things that aren't actually ironic.

5. I only know the songs, I don't know the titles
So I never knew the song was called "Ironic".
Is that ironic?

7. No, because it's not unexpected in the slightest.
Ironic = "precisely the opposite of that which is to be expected" :)

8. Frank Zappa
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 10:09 PM by NightTrain
I had a lot of respect for Zappa as a human being. Politically and socially, his heart was always in the right place. And he was a doo-wop fan--always a plus in my book!

Unfortunately, I've always found Zappa's music to be a crashing bore. After about 10 minutes, I'm ready for something--anything!--else.
