Has anyone here taken the Miller's Analogy Test?

If so how was it? I'm scheduled to take it on March 15th, the program I applied to would accept the MAT or GRE and I opted with the MAT because it seems easier (no math logic type questions). Did I make the right decision? Is it worth while to buy a preparation book? If so which one?

Any help here would be appreciated

2. I did not take it, but my advice to anyone taking

a standardized test is to do some practice tests beforehand. I have about 35 practice LSAT tests staring at me right now.:crazy:

3. I've taken it. Yes, you made the right decision.

The graduate program I was in also accepted either, and I opted for the MAT. (It had been so long since I'd taken math, that I knew that would be a problem.) If you're intelligent, the test should not be a problem. Each question was an analogy. It was almost 20 years ago that I took it, but I would imagine it's still pretty similar.

5. Thank god my master's degree program didn't require either test.

That was in Liberal Studies, for a M.A.L.S. degree. I would have been freaked out (altho I like analogy questions).

Like you, I had the option of choosing between the GRE and the MAT. And, like you, it had been a very long time since I had taken any type of math so I wanted to avoid the GRE.

I will say this for it. If you do not have a fairly wide base of knowledge over a wide variety of subjects it could be difficult. When I took it, there were a bunch of business and theology majors taking it that were visibly distressed. It pretty much covers everything that a good college education should cover (It's the first time I think changing my major four times actually helped me). But, if you do have a good education and have come into contact with a wide variety of subject matter, it isn't that bad.

I wouldn't really say that there is any way to study for it, so I wouldn't buy a book. Like any analogy test, you will either know it or you won't. The day before I took it I found a couple on-line analogy tests just to get me in the right frame of mind.

One bit of advice though, many grad programs want to see how you do on specific content areas of the test. If you see analogies on the test that apply to what you are getting your degree in, focus on those. It will boost the score they are looking for and better your chance of getting in. Look over the test when you get it and make a mental note of the ones you think apply to your degree and get back to the other ones after you've done your best on the degree specific Q's.

The master's program I am applying to is in the field of health science and since that was a big part of my undergrad degree, the analogies pertaining to it shouldn't be much of a problem. I also have a wide range of interests and tried to take as many non-major related courses in college that I could, so I am feeling a bit better about this test now.

I was looking at some of the online practice tests and one of the questions that really made me laugh was Vodka:Bloody Mary::_______:Tom Collins...I so knew the answer was gin...lol. I could easily pass the test if all the questions were drink related!

8. Like I said...

... it was one of the only times in my life that I was glad I switched my major four times. It will cover everything; biology, math, psychology, sociology, philosophy, world/US history, grammar, etc.

I wouldn't stress about it though. Most of the questions aren't that hard, and it's easy to pick out the ones that are weighted for specific content areas (because if you haven't been exposed to them you will have no idea what they are about). If you do well on your content area and fairly well on the non-weighted ones, you'll do fine. I scored in the 96th percentile, and I am by no means a genius.

The only question I remember from the test is...

d. Trial

I always use it as an example of how the MAT doesn't actually test how intelligent you are, just what you've been exposed to.
