3. Yep. Bought one last month. "Vista enabled"
came with XP and free 'upgrade to Vista.
So far I'll pass.
Compaq Presario.

9. Which is also annoying in a way. Macs are personal computers. Ataris are
personal computers. Acorns are personal computers. And on and on.

11. The new Intel Macs can run both the Mac OS and Windows
You could install Windows XP or Vista on the Windows side.

7. Dell are selling their PCs with XP.
The "express upgrade" to Vista is a no-cost option, which you can just ignore if you don't want Vista.

8. Either buy configure to order or get a couple of months old off the shelf one on markdown
I've done CTO through these guys with no problems: http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm You can get one from them shipped with no OS at all on it and install whatever you want- it's cheaper that way too.

10. Have a local shop or local geek build you one
You can even get custom-built "whitebook" laptops, I'm using one I built from an Asus barebone kit. We buy the Asus barebone kits at work, and deck them out to taste. We still buy multi-packs of OEM XP Pro for our systems. I must say, though, since using the Vista Ultimate PC I built XP seems like a step backward. I'm currently beta-testing the upcoming Windows Home Server system, too...THAT will be a slick product. I can't speak for anyone else, but I LOVE Vista, DRM FUD nothwithstanding. But if you need XP, a small shop can easily accomodate (or buy a barebone kit and an OEM copy of XP Pro, once you build your first you probably will never want to buy a storebought machine again, it's much more fun and you get what YOU want right down to the last RAM stick.)

12. Yup!
Go online to Dell and customize your own computer. My mom just got a new computer and told them that she wanted XP with MS Office Word and Excel. They automatically come with either Works or WordPerfect(she can't stand the latter two).
