1. Well, the under-the-sofa-level is easier for him than me, yeah
But as for what I think you're asking, no, I don't think children have some kind of "deeper" understanding or anything like that. I mean, do you remember being that way when you were a child?

2. I guess it depends on the kid, but yes, I think in general they do
I think many of us ignore our intuition out of politeness and social norms which small children have not yet been pressured to exhibit. Stranger anxiety comes to mind as an example. Notice how babies always scream when some goofball parent hands them over to W when he's campaigning?

It may just be a matter of things adults don't want to see.

Although, children don't have an adult's vocabulary, they associate things. They feel concepts they can't quite articulate. At least I did.
