Mine, circa 1955: Mom was 19, and Dad was 22 (many years before I was born, btw)

10. My mother was 19 when she met my father....
He was a year and a bit older. No photos of them from that time. She was visiting his grandfather with a girlfriend who was dating my father's cousin at the time. And sitting on a piano bench when he and his cousin walked into the room. He didn't have a chance after that. My father was a good-looking man, and they hit it off immediately.

They married a few years later, my mother was 22 and my father 23, but had difficulty having children. I was practically a change-of-life baby.

Mom was 18, I think. Sorry for the flash glare off the painting.

Dad was 28 or so. Holloman AFB, New Mexico, or Madison, WI.

I need to do some different portraits of both of them. Mom's much less shy now, and Dad's not so serious.

Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:52 PM by Hand
In Chicago. The lady on the right was a fellow anthropology student at the U. of Chicago.

They actually weren't married at the time; they had recently moved from Berkeley, CA. At that time white/Asian intermarriage was illegal in California. Dad was Jewish (not sure if the Loyal Sons of the Golden State would count him a bona fide white man), Mom was Nisei. They did get married in Chicago and were living there when Pearl Harbor happened--which was how she managed not to get sent to an internment camp.

They were an interesting pair. I miss them.

59. They did have a lot of character!
Mom and Dad were both the children of immigrants--his were Russian Jews, and hers were Japanese. He was the middle son of three brothers and she was the eldest of six children--five girls and one boy. Dad was from Boston originally--his father became a pretty successful tailor--and Mom's father eventually opened a carnation nursery in Hayward, California. They employed a lot of out-of-work Okies during the Depression. Except for Mom, the whole family spent most WWII in the Topaz internment camp in Utah.

They met in Berkeley in the early 1930s; they were both in the anthropology department, which at the time was headed by A.L. Kroeber, the guy who found Ishi, the last of one of California's native tribes. Dad was a grad student--he graduated from Harvard at age 19!--and Mom was an undergrad. They fell in love like a ton of bricks, and he endeared himself to her family by quickly learning Japanese. They both eventually transferred to the U. of Chicago, which was better at linguistics.

The other lady in the picture was a real character in her own right; she was from Wyoming and was a truly funny, earthy woman. Like most of the women in the anthropology department, she had a huge crush on Dad even though he was already spoken for. I finally figured out years later that Mom and Dad lived together without benefit of clergy for many years before getting married in 1941--that made things a lot easier on both me and my brother when we developed our own rather unconventional domestic arrangements!

Well, I could go on for hours about them. They were pretty cool people--and lifelong liberal Democrats, I might add. Dad always described himself as an unreconstructed New Deal Democrat. Needless to say, they loved Adlai Stevenson and always regretted that he never made it to the White House. I'll always be grateful to them for showing me how to be a good honest person. :toast:

76. mom and dad in the '60s
My dad looks like he's about to say something fresh to the photographer. He was a funny guy, and a wonderful dad. Wish my mom wasn't so washed out here--I love this photo of her. Also wish they weren't both gone now.

79. Jesus, look exactly like your mom much?
I look exactly like my dad...or, in the WVA/KY vernacular:

"It looks like you were just carved right off his left butt cheek!"

:(

Great pic. :)

82. Did you see the wedding pic of my parents?
I should crop it so my dad's face shows better, but there's no guessing which side of the family I look like. :D

when they were dating.

My Dad, who was From Middle TN, near Carthage, the home of Al Gore. This was made in Yancey Co., NC, in my mother's front yard.

My Mother in her classroom. This was at the end of the schoolyear; she was into arts & crafts - things the children had made are displayed all over the place. This school was at least 10 miles from a paved road or telephone, many of the children had no running water or electricity, yet they hardly look backwards or deprived.

I don't know how to enlarge the images. I am using PhotoBucket. Their instructions are mostly gibberish to me.
