He scored an invitation to the World Poker Tour celebrity invitational (he's a nobody, but did business with the WPT last year). He first sat at a table with Jennifer Tilly and poker pro John Juanda.

Now he's playing at a table with Woods, Manheim and Vince Van Patten. He met Ed Asner and Dule Hill at the pre-game cocktail party.

Paris Hilton is at the next table.

he's still in it. He doubled up through Jennifer Tilly when he was short-stacked. Woods is out.

Now he's at a table with Tilly, James L. Brooks and David Sklansky.

I've seen Woods play and he plays incredibly tight and doesn't really take advantage of his table image the way he should.

Question for DU ladies, how do you feel about ladies-only events in poker? Annie Duke refuses to play them, saying that men have no inherent advantage in poker. I mean, there are no gentlemen-only events.

Seems sexist to me.

If they play with the right men!

Realistically, there really is no difference. It depends on the skills you have as a poker player. I don't play often enough and sometimes hesitate too much. When I was playing regularly, I could be just as aggressive-or more aggressive-than the men I was playing often. Women's only poker games may be helpful for those just starting out (less intimidating for the faint of heart), but I do think they would be sexist for the advanced player.

i look at the big game and week after week the only woman playing there is jennifer harman (spelling? might be harmon)

reality is such that women don't have the same freedom or opportunity to develop poker skills, and playing tournament poker is not on the same level as being able to play the cash games, when i see a parity of women at the big game -- fuck that noise, when i see a parity of women playing at 20/40 -- then i'll say that there is no reason for women's events

the reality is that poker is a game played w. money, it's harder for women to get money, thus harder for them to play the game by the odds cold-bloodedly and not be "weak tight"

women have a serious disadvantage in the game as long as we live in a society where it so very, very, VERY hard for women to get any money at all

Any woman can learn to play poker, and in fact, women control more than enough wealth to play poker.

The notion that all the successful male players are good because they had money to start with is just not true at all. In fact, it's rare for any successful poker player to have started out with a lot of money.

There are plenty of reasons why women don't play poker in the same numbers as men, but access to a starting bankroll isn't it.

And 20/40 is not even A big game, much less THE big game.

and lack of a starting bankroll isn't that big an issue for literally tens of millions of American women (not to mention women in other countries).

At the table itself, a smart woman has two big advantages - a) she's underestimated by many of her opponents, and/or b) her opponents play too softly against her. An attractive, smart woman can take a lot of advantage of those facts.

There are far bigger reasons why you don't see a lot of women at the top tier of poker, among them lack of exposure to the game when younger (many guys played in college or in the service - most women didn't). Women also haven't traditionally been raised to be highly competitive. But these are sociological issues, not economic ones.

A smart woman like Annie Duke - who was both raised to be competitive AND was exposed to poker early, does very well indeed.

I loved how she completely dismantled Phil Hellmuth a couple of years ago to win the $2M prize at the World Poker Championship. She had just eliminated her brother, Howard Lederer to make it heads up with Hellmuth (the Poker Brat).

As one analyst put it, "not only did she get inside Phil's head, she took out a flashlight and had a look around."

On one hand, Annie flopped Kings and Nines and Phil flopped top pair, K,7, with no kicker. When the pot had a little body to it, she made a big bet and he made a long troubled mumbling fold. She showed him the Nine! He jumped up from the table and debated out loud what it meant. She coyly said, "What do I know? I thought the Nine was good." :) :)

he made it to Day 2, but just called to say he got knocked out by Nick Cassavetes. Dick Van Patten got knocked out on the same hand - 66 (van patten), 10/10 (bro) and JJ (Cassavetes).

He had a great time.
