so I made sushi for the first time tonight

Okay, that's not really my sushi :) I didn't think to take a picture until it was almost gone.

Mine, I confess, didn't look quite as good as that, but damn if it didn't taste delicious :D

1. Sushi parties are a blast!
Did you make it all yourself? Was it catered? Did your guests make their own? Inquiring minds want to know!

7. That would be fun to have guests make their own
That sounds like a lot of fun, actually. :)

Tonight it was just my wife and I--We love going out for sushi, and I've had the mat to make the maki rolls for a year or two ... but I just never got around to making it before tonight. Don't know why I finally got in the mood.

Ah, if only I had some green tea ice cream for dessert :9

15. I have a recipe for those who fear raw fish
Use strips of colby cheese, spam or ham, and a squirt of mayo for the seafood inhibited. It makes the fearful feel brave.

21. spam sushi
brave indeed! ;) All in all, I'll stick with the raw fish :)

Incidentally, I saw your post in the ice cream thread about the sushi ice cream :wow:

The wasabi ice cream I'd try, though :bounce:

3. What kind of sushi?
Where did you get your nori?

I really want to try my hand at making sushi. What did you use as a guide? What kind of recipes?

(And thanks for giving me a killer sushi craving. :( ;) )

14. I got the Nori and rice at one of the local international markets
were fortunate enough to have quite a few great asian/international markets here, and I picked up the Nori there. Though when I went to the supermarket today I noticed they had the same brand.

I didn't have any hard and fast recipes, other than for making the rice itself--I just picked out veggies that looked good when I was at the store--I wound up with cucumber, avocado, bell pepper, carrot, and green onion. I made four rolls, altogether--a spicy crab roll w/ sri racha sauce, a futomaki/veggie roll, a more-or-less California roll (except it wasn't inside out, since I didn't want to try that my first time around), and a red curry chicken roll (my own invention :)).

Visually, the results were mixed ;) It will definitely take me some practice to get the presentation down. But I was thrilled with how they tasted. I highly recommend that you give it a shot--i'm sure it would turn out great.

16. Thanks for the advice.
I'll look for nori next time I'm in NOLA.

Sushi is my one huge addiction.

Did you use a rice cooker or did you cook it on the stovetop?

18. I cooked it on the stove, but I'm thinking I might get a rice cooker
I don't have one, but if I get into the habit of doing sushi regularly, I'm sure it will make life easier :)

Sushi is my one huge addiction.
I hear that--but as addictions go, that one's not bad :)

23. Sounds like it could definitely become a hobby.
:)

If you enjoy doing it, then investing in the proper tools is good...I'm going to have to give this a try...must remember to stop at the big market in New Orleans next time I'm down there.

9. You probably have the fry-o-lator set at too high a temperature.
400-425 degrees is all you need for sushi.

6. Very good! Did you put anything on it? Or make just the sushi?
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:57 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Like tuna or uni or anything?

Just making sushi itself is a feat - not easy! After a few times not so bad, of course, but the first few times... whew! Let alone learn how to form it properly AND then add a topping to it.

Or just the sushi, maybe wrapped in a fried tofu cone?

Did you serve the sushi in individual units, or in a bowl?

I'm not a big fan of sushi itself, but I love nigiri and chirashi sushi. Or even just forgo the sushi, and go straight to sashimi.

Yum!

8. Hey...
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:58 PM by Maddy McCall
not to hijack this thread, but what was the name of bread (Jewish ethnic bread) that you and I discussed before?

I lost my internet recipe and instructions on how to braid it, and I can't for the life of me find it again.

I've got 5 lbs of bread flour and a big bottle of yeast...I think I'm going to give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks!!

24. I found a video online that shows how to six-strand braid the dough.
That's going to be the worst part for me. The woman does it so quickly that it's difficult to see what she's doing...if you want me to send you a link to that video, let me know...she goes through the whole history behind the bread as well as how to make it.

17. I've never had the chirashi
I like nigiri, but I usually go with the maki rolls (with or without sashimi), which is what I did tonight.

The rice was a challenge ... it wound up heavier and a little chewier than it would have been had an expert made it, but still tasty :9 I'll keep practicing :)

20. be sure you rinse it well
..and don't stir it. I've had varied results with different brands of short grain rice. But rinsing seems to help.

22. true on the rinsing
I rinsed it a bit before cooking, but apparently not enough, because before the water boiled I could see starch gathering at the top. I'll definitely rinse it more thoroughly next time around ...

25. What is it about Sushi that is so addictive?
I picked some up on a whim yesterday and sowed down a whole tray of it myself. I justify it because it seems so healthy. (Compared to deepfried perch and french fries and cole slaw.)

Now I may have to go back for more, thanks.
