How cold does it have to get for you to stop barbecuing?
I am dying for bbq ribs and my connection says it's still too cold outside.

41. We used to grill lime-and-garlic-cured pickerel in the winter in Maine
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 06:11 PM by jpak
and when I lived in Newfoundland, we had a BBQ every Friday night - come snow, sleet or deep freeze...

2. If you ran the grill yourself, you'd get to set the rules.
That's what I learned the hard way.

4. For most things I do myself
but this is a slow smoked Memphis style that requires a smoker that I don't have, and it also took him a couple of years to perfect the process. He rocks.

(Are you a control freak too?)

12. No, but I've had the grill/BBQ battle myself.
I finally realized that the only way that I could dictate the schedule is if I learned the whole process myself. My SO smokes in a big Weber kettle and lusts after the real smokers.

3. It's not about cold. It's about precipitation.
No wetness pouring down? Perfect time to fire it up.

7. It sucks. I'm JONESING for ribs in the worst way.
I think around about April or May is when I'm starting. I live in Ohio. It's just too hard to keep temperature up and consistent starting in October, unless you have the rare 65 degree sunny day.

Plus we have a fire pit by the grill so that helps when it is really chilly!

our grill connected to a 100-gallon propane tank, so she doesn't have to worry about running out.

25. never too cold for grilling out!
I've done it when it was 0-10F a few times and what's crazy is that whatever I'm cooking seems to taste even better than in the warmer months. Maybe it's the beer I'm drinking to keep warm...

27. I was grilling earlier this year
when it was below 10 F. Snow is not a problem either. But I don't stand there with a spatula in one hand and a beer in the other. I let it cook while I go inside. Otherwise, that beer freezes

When I used charcoal, it was more difficult. The starter fluid didn't want to ignite when it got that cold. I had to use a splash of white gasoline to get the charcoal fluid going. That was exciting.

Bon apetit.

28. Tried it once when it was 40 below zero. Didn't work. Meat froze.
But, I made quite a name for myself in the neighborhood ;) Tried telling my then-husband, a native of Southern California, that BBQ chicken was NOT a good choice in Montana for his February birthday, but it was what he wanted.

Hey, I tried to please the guy.

29. Hey everybody - There's a difference between grilling and barbequing
Grilling is done with very high temperatures and short cooking times. Think hamburgers and steaks.

BBQ is done with lower temps and much longer cooking times. It's done with tougher cuts of meat like ribs and brisket. People from Memphis or Kansas City know what I'm talking about.

When I do ribs, I will slow cook them for 6 hours. That's hard to do when the temperature outside is 35 and snowing (which is what the forecast is for next weekend here in WI). It's not hard on me, but it would be hard to maintain a constant temperature inside my cooker for 6 hours in the cold and wind.

I have heard of people building insulated windbreaks or putting water heater blankets around their cookers, but I haven't done that.

In the meantime, if any of you show up at my place, I'll be happy to grill you whatever you want

42. Yes there is a difference.
I do both year round.

When it's cold I move my smoker next to the house on a covered patio. It's protected on 3 sides. The south side is exposed but it hasn't been a problem, yet.

It gets really windy here but not too cold. We do have cold spells with temps in the 20°'s but they seldom last longer than a week.

It's upper 60°'s today.

30. The cold does limit my use of the Smoker
because it is just a metal cylindar so once it gets into the 20's it's just too difficult to keep a constant temp.

Sigh...someday I'll get myself a Big Green Egg http://www.biggreenegg.com/

But I use the grill in almost any weather...it has to be heavy sleet or something for me not to be willing to go out there to do some grilling. :)
