Poll question: Fly or take a road trip?
I have to go to Germany in July for a festival. I have one free day after the end of the festival to go see MissHoneychurch, who will be near by. How should I get there?

Option 1: take a cheap flight there and back.

Option 2: load up the (new) car, take it on the Eurostar and take road trip.

Option 1 is the cheapest, paradoxically, and may even be the most eco-friendly, unless I can load up my car with a few friends who are also going. They would want to leave the day before me, though.

Option 2 is an unknown quantity: I have never driven in Europe before, and it could be a lot of effort. But it could also be an adventure. I haven't been through the Channel tunnel yet, either. Also my car is quite fast and it could be fun on the Autobahn. It will cost about double the plane fare, not counting gas.

I genuinely can't decide what I want to do.

3. Yeah
It's a bit of a dream of mine to drive in Germany, particularly the Rhineland. Freaking beautiful, plus, like you said, the Autobahn.

12. That is the question.
I guess I probably can, although it is true I am apprehensive. These continentals are crazy on the road! For all our faults, us Brits are very courteous drivers - probably the best in the world.

I enjoy flying but I adore road trips. I've always dreamed of driving around Europe - sounds wonderful!

7. I vote Option 3:

Take the Concorde, pick up MHC on the way, and jump the puddle to visit DA.

My second recommendation is to drive, because life is short and given the choice between seeing a beautiful part of the world that you may never have the opportunity to see again while jamming to your fav tunes, or being squished in a tiny seat and staring at the puke bag in the back pocket of the seat ahead of you, well...

Hi billysweet!

10. Sadly
BA's Concorde fleet was decommissioned in 2002 I think, and Air France had stopped flying theirs after the crash in 2000. Concorde flies no more. :( Drive it is, then.

9. Biking has a different cachet over here
It's all about Japanese imports that do 500mph and dressing up in your leathers like a racing driver. Not really my thing. :)

If you aren't used to driving with totally insane assholes doing whatever their car will handle, you'll get yourself killed. (Remembering my bil doing a u-turn in the middle of a highway while doing about 80...legally. Never, ever again)

Or better yet, take public transport. You'll see the same stuff...or more...you'll get there just about as quick (130 km = 81 miles) and YOU'LL GET THERE.

15. I went with a friend up the Autobahn once in an old 1.0-litre Nissan Micra
It seemed that, a few crazies in their BMWs aside, (and one person in a Lambourghini doing warp speed) most people drove in that sensible 70-80mph zone.

25. European trains are really good, but that would cost me so much dough
The Eurostar can take me as far as Brussels, but I still have quite some way to go from there. And that is around £150 itself.

It takes like four hours to get across Germany. Shit I went from Koln to Dresden during a nap.
