So, my supervisor at work killed himself on Friday.
I am still in shock. He was always friendly. He was planning things far into the future, not something one usually does when considering suicide. A situation came up, alcohol was involved, and I guess due to the alcohol, he didn't see a way out.

He has a family, who my heart goes out to.

It will be a tough day for everyone where you work tomorrow. His family must be devastated.

3. I can't imagine all they are going through.
Guilt, confusion, anger, ambivalence. I worry about them financially, as well.

2. My high school principal committed suicide.
A couple years after my graduation, he moved down to Long Island.
He'd been having marital problems.
He hung himself.
When I was in high school, we always made fun of him for his rumored drinking problem (he even got his hands on a drawing i had done of him passed out at the local bar)...
I felt so guilty afterwards, when I realized how troubled he had really been...
It can be so sudden...

6. It is, very sudden.
When my co-worker called, I couldn't believe it. I thought he might have been joking. I hoped he was joking, so I could just be mad at him for joking like that. He wasn't joking.

I am still a little numb. I imagine his family is, as well.

18. I had a co-worker kill herself about 10 years ago...
Two days after her 40th birthday, she found out about the long-time affair that her husband had been having, and i guess she just couldn't cope.

She and i had been close friends for a couple of years, but i was off that week (technically 'on vacation', but stayed in town). She didn't call me all week, which was unusual, and when i called out at her place, her sister told me what had happened.

The store where we worked (sports retailer, but independently owned... roughly 30 employees) closed down for 3 days, so that all of the employees that wanted to could go to the wake and funeral and such.

20. My high school drama teacher, whom I adored, killed himself right before our graduation.
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 10:54 PM by Radio_Lady
May 15, 1956.

He was a gay man who apparently was wrongly accused of stealing some money from one of the school offices. The money was being gathered to buy a new rug, and it went missing... I never learned the real details. He lived alone in a small apartment, snuffed out the pilot light, turned on the gas oven, and put his head in it.

I still remember that day more than 50 years later. He is buried somewhere in his hometown of Johnson City, Tennessee. That is all I know.

RIP, E.B.M.

26. 35 years ago
I was working in an investment office. One of the sales managers drove out to a lovers' lane, propped a shotgun against a fence, and killed himself. I'd heard he had gambling debts. He had grown sons and a daughter who was about 12. We drove out to the funeral - small town in Ohio. Meeting the family ("We know it was an accident") is something that haunts me to this day.

It's very hard to deal with. You tell yourself you can't imagine doing this on your worst day, and then think about how they must have been feeling.

It's awful. But there's nothing you can do except hope that person found the peace they were seeking.

28. A lot of depressed people are always freindly to others
Part of the problem is depressed people mask it great, usually because they either don't feel comfortable talking about something they themselves have a hard time understanding,or they just don't want to burden others with their story.

While the alcohol certainly didn't help,I can guarantee that there was more going on in his head for a long time.

Depression is a major problem in this country, and sadly one that hasn't gotten the attention it should.
