I've been playing with this burner for days and wasting disks, so tomorrow I'm going to rewritable until I get this _______ insert curse word here fingered out.

2. I dropped it all the way
it still messes up, I'm trying to burn a couple of slide shows I made with windows movie maker, and they aren't coming through. I'm not doing something right so I'm stepping back and letting things simmer.

3. It might be the brand of DVD you use.
I bought a cheapie brand and continually burned duds. Then searching around, I found this guide:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

So I bought Sony, as one of the recommended brands, and it worked.

4. There are a number of things that it could be:
1) Crappy media: there are good brands (lots) and bad.

2) A crappy writer: there are good brands (units) and bad.

3) Crappy software: sometimes the free stuff has things left out.

4) There is some limitation imposed by your system. I know with my system (Win98SE) that unless I have DMA enabled on my hard disks, I can't even write a high speed CDR. You may have too many things running in the background, too little memory, a lot of paging going on for some other reason, etc. (I have an older computer and keep other things to a minimum when writing even a CDR.) There are system utilities that you can run, like Resource Meter (pretty feeble) and System Monitor, that can give you some idea where the problem lies. (These take resources themselves, but they can still steer you in the right direction.) There could also be some interfering application, so maybe you should try eliminating stuff from the startup list, even if you have plenty of IO, CPU power.

(I always verify -- both internally and externally to the burner SW, as I've seen the former fail.)

5. It's just a basic cheapy burner
lite on, I've burned a couple of good dvds, what I did was buy the wrong conversion software. I tried convertxtodvd and it did everything I wanted, then I found another conversion program that appeared to do everything as well for a few dollars less.
That was a mistake, I'm going to buy covertx now and forget this other program, if lifes lessons were free we'de never learn,

6. My experience with Lite-On burners
is generally good. (But I've had many problems with media, including media that worked fine on one burner, but not on another (wouldn't even read).)

Like other burners, after a period of constant use, they can get hot and start failing (I let the media and burner cool down before I do a burner-SW-external verify).

I'm not familiar with that program, but if there's a write-to-disk then write-to-DVD option, you might consider it. Myself, I'd be pretty darn sure it was the SW before shelling out more money.

7. I need more disks now anyway
after I've burned through these, I'm going to rw until I get everything figured out, give me a week or so then I'll do this right everytime with a blindfold on.

9. Do it Verbatim...
Verbatim brand only. They make their discs in house. Which is almost unique in the industry...

And if the brand starts with the letter "M", do yourself a favor and AVOID them.
