Since everyone hates Nickleback:
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 04:28 PM by lildreamer316
"The video for "If Everyone Cared" was directed by newcomer Dori Oskowitz, filmed at Armoury Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. The video illuminates the profound impact made when one individual incites change for the betterment of the world. Inter-cut between an intimate Nickelback performance and historical images, the video tells the stories of four ordinary people who have done extraordinary things for humanity: Bob Geldolf (Live Aid), Nelson Mandela, Peter Benenson (founder of Amnesty International) and Betty Williams (World Centers of Compassion for Children International).

'Nickelback's success has thankfully afforded us the opportunity as a band to make a significant contribution to the organization my wife and I have supported for years, International Children's Awareness Canada," comments guitarist Ryan Peake. "Now, with the release of 'If Everyone Cared,' a song and video that carries a message of positive change, we can globalize our efforts with Amnesty International. The idea is simply to do something that moves you and helps others, no matter how small.'

Nickelback, one of the world's biggest selling rock bands, will donate 100% of the proceeds from digital sales of their new single and video "If Everyone Cared" to charity. Donations will be made to Amnesty International and International Children's Awareness Canada, a charity guitarist Ryan Peake has supported for several years. Nickelback, Roadrunner Records, WEA Corp. and Warner/Chappell Music will donate all proceeds from sales of the digital single and video beginning February 1, 2007."

Yep; they sure suck balls. Just horrible singers and a really shallow band; there. Oh, and they've never, ever put socially conscious lyrics together before this, either.

And btw, Bob Geldolf was lead singer for the Boomtown Rats pre-Live Aid. He wasn't exactly an "ordinary guy."

But they sure ain't Creed, that's for damn sure!

This just in...they still suck.

I don't care if they spend all their free time feeding the poor in Delhi. Perhaps they're great humanitarians. But they still suck as a band. When you look in the dictionary for the word 'suck,' there's a picture of Nickelback.

6. You don't understand what that is about.
Read between the lines. Later on he says he hates the same thing he loves. Clue.
He hates that she feels she needs to be degraded.

Feel free to not like their music. But you fell for the oldest trick in the book-direct interpretation of lyrics.

12. I barely know who they are
What I've heard of their music, I haven't been particularly impressed with. Just because a group or individual is socially conscious doesn't mean they have talent or that I have to like what they put out.

When I find that a band or artist I like IS socially conscious, that certainly makes me like them more. And when I find out a band or artist that I like has political opinions I disagree with, I may like them less depending on how far our opinions diverge. But just because an artist I don't care for is socially conscious, I'm not going to like their music any more though I may have more respect for them as individuals.

In the end, why should it matter to you if other people like them?

16. I see you don't follow the herd
I almost posted something like this a while back. But why bother? Taste in music, movies and such is a very subjective thing. If people around here want to trash Nickleback and it makes them feel better sobeit. The formation of the consensus is itself a phenomenon of mild interest and based on things that have been said I gather there is a context for the evaluation of NB which may have little (if anything) to do with the band itself or the lyrical content. I am not exactly sure what that context is but watching the herd gather and run is always fun. :)

NB has done quite a few songs I find really good and that particular video really hits me in the gut. So what? I like Beethoven, too. Doubtless, there are folk around here who hate "The Pastoral". Who cares? I learned a long time ago not to allow anyone else's opinion to particularly affect my enjoyment of art, music, movies, literature or ice cream.

Keep the music that moves ya, split all the ends up, dance while ye may.

Totally bereft of original ideas and, IMO, barely listenable. Some internet wiseass made an MP3 of their first two hit songs - one in the left stereo channel, the other playing simultaneously in the right. They're absolutely identical, to the note. Freakin' hilarious.

23. To answer your question
1. Turn on your local rock station.

2. Wait a few minutes (really, this won't take long at all, which is why I don't drive anywhere without my ipod.)

3. When you hear a song with very stupid lyrics being "sung" by a guy who apparently doesn't understand the difference between emoting and imitating a cat being run over by a steamroller, that's them. Or a disturbance in space-time is bringing you radio signals from 2000 and it's Creed, eventually you'll figure that out based on the vaguely Jesus-y vibe.

Anti-Nickelback aggression? I just want to listen to Cooper and Tobin in the morning, and every now and then they decide to play a song, and one time in 20, it's Nickelback...radio goes off immediately. The first time I heard 'Animals' I sat there in disbelief through the entire song (I was paralized by some mixture of shame, revulsion, and horror), then spent the next 20 minutes yelling at the radio for betraying me in such a horrible way.
Aggression? I don't have aggression.

Music is subjective. I think anytime a band hits the pop charts, a certain segment of the "musically enlightened" have to bash them just because they've hit mainstream. I tend to defend the bashees.

Listening to their "All the Right Reasons" cd now just to see why they're so hated. I don't get it ... but to each his own.

I live off of the old rock. Doobie Bros. Early Chicago. Steely Dan. David Bowie. Todd Rundgren, even. I just love classic rock and jazz.

I really appreciate you taking the time to post these. I'm always open to new music.

I'm listening to them now and so far, I see our tastes differ quite a bit but I'm not through yet. :)

Thanks again...

Nickelback lacks the originality, creativity, and non-shittiness for me to ever say "Yeah, I don't like them, but they don't suck or anything." They really do suck, and they're one of the few cases where I don't think it's really all that subjective. They're songs aren't well written, and they are incredibly derivative and unoriginal. (What's worse is they're a crappy derivative of Creed, who in turn are a crappy derivative of Pearl Jam. Nickelback are derivative of a derivative.) The fact that they seem to take themselves so seriously as "artists" based on the interviews I've seen with them just makes them even more of a joke.

91. I don't know Primate...
There's really not anything there I cared for much. But thanks for posting them.

I guess my argument isn't so much about Nickleback per se, but the fact that we have our individual likes and dislikes and I still say it's subjective. Just like any kind of art. I'm sure there's a large percentage of people that would have something negative to say about the bands you posted. Who's to say who's right, ya know?

"Oh, Fugazi/Refused has too much screaming," or whatever, but that's something that WOULD be subjective, which I can accept. My argument as to what makes Nickelback so shitty, that they're a derivative of a derivative, isn't subjective. Music isn't some completely abstract entity that doesn't have certain objective factors, and if your band sounds like a ripoff of another band, that's not exactly a subjective quality. It's also pretty objective that they take themselves far too seriously. Every interview I've seen or read with them they've spent so much time trying to convince the world that they really are a great band and that their music is something special and original.

I mean, hell, they defended having two singles that are almost the exact same song by saying, "I think that's remarkable for someone to notice that there is a hit quality. If all hits sound the same, then sorry. When you are a band that has a distinct style such as us or AC/DC, that happens. When you have a distinct style, you run the risk of sounding similar."

Translation: "Hey, we're not very original, but we say we are, so take us seriously, dammit!."

It's not a distinct sound, it's shitty and lazy songwriting. Listen to an entire At The Drive-In record, for example. Not one song on there sounds the same. That's true for MANY bands that I didn't even list. Even a lot of shitty bands.

Bands like Fugazi and Refused, on the other hand, are bands that have influenced entire genres and even people outisde their genres, and will continue to do so. Nickelback will never be able to say that. And ALL of the bands I posted have brought an originality and quality to their music that you don't get from trying to sound like a band that's trying to sound like Pearl Jam.

58. Sorry, they still suck. Hard.
Good lyrics don't make up for bad music.
I could write a beautiful, emotional tribute to our troops (or something that tugs at the heartstrings) and set it to shreddingly awful music, and people would by and large hate it, because it sounds like garbage.
As I've said before, it doesn't matter how pretty the turd is, it's still a turd.

66. I'm not so goddamned dumb that I judge music by the politics of the performers.
Anyone who does is a fucking moran.

That's as ignorant as liking a band because the singer is HOT.

America in a fucking nutshell, that.

"Oooh, but their music FUCKING ROCKS because they give money to homeless shelters!"
