25. The Lounge is a tough gang to get with.

At first it seems like nobody knows, or even cares, who the fuck you are. I spent a month in GD before venturing over here. It can be just as intimidating around here sometimes.

You just have to start posting, really. We ARE rather shallow, fast-paced people, and there's no doubt that some posters can garner a thousand replies based on name recognition alone, but if, say, your subject line generally kicks ass or (best of all) involves double-entendre, you'll get views and, hopefully, posts. Strike up convos with the people who reply.

Some newbies go for the nice and slow approach, posting things of fair intellectual value, lurking and searching out for posters who seem similar to them and replying to these people. This may take a while, but it can also result in some honest relationships. Other newbies just jump right into the fray and get attention by their sheer omnipresence (a cat named MrCoffee did that a few months back, though I'm not sure that he's been seen in a while). Choose whatever way seems to work for you.

It seems trite, but an "I'm a newbie!" post can honestly help you break into the mold and assess which posters you think you'll fit in with, and which posters you might need to go more slowly with. You'll meet people you'll love from the beginning, and you'll meet people you just can't stand, also from the beginning. Giving a short background of yourself, though, is generally an excellent way to open up a dialogue.

There are a thousand tips and tricks for the Lounge. The biggest is just to mess around a bit and have fun.

Seriously, from what I've observed, the people who know each other are CONSTANTLY flirting and making sex jokes. Obviously your going to remember someone who keeps telling you how hot you are or makes double entendres, right? I would try it, but quite frankly, my girlfriend is gorgeous, I'm not interested in flirting with people on the net that I don't know, and I don't have the time. So I suppose I'll have to continue living in obscurity. That being said, if you do flirt like crazy, your bound to make friends of the regulars...which is a good thing, because they really are great people.

Don't forget there are a lot of sub forums (R/T, Health, Science, etc) as well as groups (photography, skeptics, astrologists, etc). If you want to meet some great people who share your interests, I would go to those forums. I've met some people in those groups who I would be tempted to call friends.

   I've been here a couple of years now, don't post all that frequently -- although I HAVE been known to fire off a dozen or more responses to a single post in a single night, then go a week without a word.
   I have discovered, however, that I can't go more than a week without checking in, without touching base, here at the lounge...
   I tend to be one of those "serious commenters", having never really learned the art of light conversation. When I DO try and chat, I trip over my tongue often as not, and (I fear) have been known to put my foot in my mouth with distressing frequency but the lovelies here are a most forgiving group... balm to the soul (and the fragile and oft-broken self-esteem) of this recovering gynophile.
   I guess, just be real, and trust the folks here to return the favor!
