Have you ever gone to the Movies alone?

If you can't find a single soul to go to the movies with you should you go alone?

I have the night off of work and I want to go to the movies to see Weird Santa. Should I go alone or wait until it comes out on DVD?

but I wholeheartedly recommend a matinee for movie-going alone.

I have tried it, but it makes me really uncomfortable. I think it's something that's easier for women, but that's based on my perception that the entire world knows any woman can get a date for the movies, and chooses not to, but any guy there alone is there because he can't get a date.

4. The first one I saw by myself was Chinatown in 1974...

liked it so much I've done it ever since. I see only about 25% of my movies with Mrs. Richardo. (Or she with me - we have "divergent" tastes. :D In fact we've been known to go to the multiplex together and proceed to different screens to see the movie of our choice. :shrug: )

It is, in some ways, more fun to go alone because then I feel like I'm there with the whole audience. I can also sit wherever I want...

The Theater has 28 screens on 3 levels. It's the largest theater that I have ever been in and I might act like my date got lost or something like that.

I had no idea what I was getting into, except that my 10 year old self was into monster movies and space battle movies already.

Star Wars blew me away - and trite as it sounds, in some ways, it changed my life.

It was also the first movie I saw more than once at a theater - I think I saw it three times, but I know for sure I saw it twice. And when it came back a few years later, I saw it once or twice again.

In the year after my son was born, I had exactly one Wednesday evening a week to myself. I would put Boy and Wife to bed, then go catch the 9pm or later showing of whatever I was anxious to see. It was heaven. 2 hours plus to myself, no bottles, no diapers, no conversation. I wanna see the movie. If I wanna socialize, the movie is the last place I wanna go with friends.

And these days, the projecters are started and run pretty much automatically - no reel changes. So more often than not there IS no projectionist to watch or resent you.

30. I Do It All the Time

What I like is it gives me plenty of time to shape my own opinion about the movie, and not be pressured to conform with my date's point of view - or work to get them to agree with mine.

I don't have to articulate a viewpoint or intellectualize a feeling upon walking out of the theatre, I can just enjoy it or forget it.

OTOH, when I want to go back and see something like RotK or PotC a second time, I try to borrow my friends' kids as an excuse.

As for Bad Santa - go see it, don't wait.

I went to see a really depressing movie called "House of Sand and Fog" not that it was bad... just really depressing.

I tend to do it when there are very few people around. I wouldn't do it on a Fri or Sat night. But that's just me.

I had an "Only one in the theatre" experience that made me feel dirty. The movie was "Bring It On." It had been presented to me (by my smarter-than-average-bear niece) as more than just the teen piffle I thought it was. I'm the only one there, the movie comes on, I'm ten minutes into it and feel like Michael Jackson at a daycare. The usher actually came it once (they NEVER do this at this theater) and I began wondering if he was checking to make sure I wasn't jacking off. I left and saw another movie in the multiplex, and throttle my niece the next time I saw her. Now when I see Kirsten Dunst in anything I feel unclean.

Like others here, I've got to the movies myself since I was very little. So it doesn't bother me a bit. I can go when I want, usually the matinee, and sit where I want.

Would I love the company? Sure. Would I miss out on something I really enjoy just because I'm alone? No way. :D

I like to go to big visual movies, sit front and center, and put my legs over the seat in front. Sometimes sneak in a beer or two. (And I'm 49 and have a professional job.)

After the first time, I lost all sense of self-consciousness. No one cares. Once you get immersed in a movie, it's just like a big screen in your own living room.

I like a lot of serious films that my friends aren't into so I go alone sometimes. Last year I went to see "Adaptation" alone and ended up being the only person in one of those stadium theatres. It was great! No talkers - wonderful experience.

I despise horror movies, but am a big fan of Jodie Foster's. So when "The Silence of the Lambs" came out I decided I could take the horror to see her performance.

Although no one was seated immediately next to me, the theatre was packed and the rows before & behind me were full. During the scene in the ambulance, in which Lecter sits up and removes the face of the guard he'd killed, I sat bolt upright and shouted, "OH, MY GOD!!"

In college, my husband had a retail job. I needed to do Christmas shopping. I realized that I probably wouldn't want to look at stuff for almost 8 hours though. I went to a movie for a rest. I saw Angels's Ashes. It was Saturday afternoon.

The first movie I saw by myself was "Paper Moon." I was at the Dayton Mall and had some time to kill. I've no regrets about that film, and most of the others I've chosen to see by myself have been worth it, too. In fact, I would have missed a lot of great movies if I'd waited around for someone to be free to accompany me.

Besides, if you want a cathartic session of weeping over a sad movie, go by yourself. It's pretty lonely to be openly crying at the end of a movie when the person who accompanied you is standing there dry-eyed and embarrassed.

I know it can be wonderful to share a movie with someone. There are times when even an audience seems united in the experience (I used to love going to the student union movie theater for this reason when I was in college). But don't wait for the phone to ring and don't wait for someone to have a slot in his/her schedule to see a movie. Just go and don't bother with what anyone else thinks.

A couple of months ago I had two hours to kill while waiting for the kids to do a band fundraiser. I went to see the last Matrix movie alone rather than hen around the mall and truly enjoyed every moment of it.
Last month went with the family to see The Missing and worried the whole movie if they were liking it, if they needed something, if they were bored.

I am also an only child and am used to doing things on my own. I would go to the movie. If you are uncomfortable, you can always leave. :)
