1. Hell of a solo — but
I don't think solos should be the measure of drummers.

Every time I've seen Rich, he was featured; the band would play 32 bars, then he'd go for about five minutes, then the band would play another 32 bars. So I really have no idea how he is as a percussion accompanist — which, IMO, is the measure of a drummer.

Given that, Ed Shaughnessy is the best jazz drummer I've ever heard, and Ian Paice (Deep Purple) the best rock drummer, with a nod to Carl Palmer (who was neither rock nor jazz, but bits of both, with a few other things thrown in).

2. I got stuff of his where he plays with the band throughout,no real solos at all
It's excellent.

I agree that solos shouldn't be the measure (I normally despise solos of any kind) but damn, that was one hell of a solo :)

Can't really argue about Ed Shaughnessy though.

3. John Bonham would wipe the floor with Paice.
Bear in mind, I LOVE Deep Purple. Between Lord, Gillan and Blackmore, they had way more talent than Led Zeppelin (let's face it, Zep's rhythm section was the best part).

But I've heard Paice's drumming and Bonzo's drumming live, both solos and accompanying. Bonzo could play anything Paice does, but Paice would have difficulty drumming like Bonzo.

That being said, Paice is still good, but I wouldn't dream of considering him the best rock drummer.

I totally agree with you regarding Carl Palmer though. That man is criminally underrated.

4. Well, see...
I said Paice was the best I've heard, which is quite a bit different from saying he's the best, period. For all I know, there're 4,000 guys who make Paice sound like a wind-up bear, but I haven't heard 'em.

What I've heard from Bonham, though, struck me as amateurish. I can only assume I haven't heard his best work.

FWIW, I base my opinion on "Made In Japan" — particularly "Space Truckin'," on which Paice kept it up for some 20 minutes, minus a minute or so during Blackmore's violin solo. That remains the single most impressive example of rock drumming I've ever heard; he must've been wiped out when it was over. (OTOH, I grant that his solo on "The Mule" was good, but not great — except I've never heard a single-kick bass roll done that fast.)

6. Harumph. Shows what you know about drummers.

If you're talking strictly drums, NOBODY beats this guy:

But if you mean world's most brilliant percussionist ever, in general, then there's this dude, whom I daresay has played more gigs than all the other drummers mentioned in this thread, combined.:

18. LOL! Thanks for that!

A most excellent and worthy effort on both parts, it would have been difficult to choose a winner. Unfortunately, I believe that physically disabling one's opponent via assault with one's musical instrument is an automatic disqualification.

:hi:

12. Yeah, but Carl Palmer can't keep a steady beat to save his life.
From ELP to Asia and beyond, he's all over the place. Speeds up, slows down, and I'm pretty darn sure it's not part of the arrangement. :)

24. For me there is no best, just a lot of really great drummers
who all hold unique positions in the history of music.

Here are some of my favorites

Joe Jones pretty much invented modern drumming.

James Black IMO the greatest funk drummer of all time and the guy who pretty much invented the backbeat.

Art Blakey, musicality that is rarely heard from a drummer.

Elvin Jones is one of my favorites b/c he just sounds so right with the band in everything he plays.

Joe Morello, that shit he did with Brubeck still blows my mind.

Brian Blade, a young gun who is IMO head and shoulders above any other drummer playing today. I am also very biased here b/c we have been friends since we went to high scool together.

For rock drummers (who I obviously don't hold in as high regard as jazz drummers) Stewart Corpland stands with any of the others I have heard mentioned.

26. That's a good outlook
I feel the same way. There's so many great musicians that it comes down to personal taste.I know drummers in extreme music that are awesome that most people wouldn't appreciate because of the style of music around them.I didn't get into jazz at all until about five years ago,and if I heard any in the eighties I would have barfed. Now I love it and can see how great so many of the jazz players are.

I did like Buddy Rich as a kid whenever I saw him on the Tonight Show, but I didn't really equate that to jazz at the time because I didn't know any better.I just thought it was great drumming.

28. I think that one of the great things about growing up in Louisiana
is that you grow up with jazz as popular music. Jazz has been boxed up and put on a shelf in too many places. It has become too intellectualized (if that is a word). In reality jazz comes from real life, the rythmns of the street, the play between life and death. When you grow up with it around you everywhere, it is easier to figure that out at an earlier age.

I used to watch his appearances on the Tonight Show way back when Johnny Carson was still IT.

Thanks for sharing. Now...check out a duet.

7. Thanks Forkboy, that was AWESOME! Even though I have never owned a set of drums,
I have been a fan of drummers all of my life. Whenever I go to see live music, I always watch the drummer. Neil Peart was the favorite one that I have seen live and he always impresses me whenever I watch him. I als like Bonham but I was never that impressed with him,I prefer the style of Ian Paice and Cozy Powell. All that being said, I think this performance was fantastic and I never saw any of the above listed drummers do what Buddy did on this video. I especially like this quote from a poster on YouTube:

"Buddy Rich once did a solo in the late 40`s using only 2 bass drums and nothing else. Someone said it`s 20 minutes long and was recorded.Louie Bellson was there and when Buddy finished,he walked by Bellson and Bellson apparently said "fuck you Buddy",so it must have been pretty good".

21. since I 've been practicing more rolls and paradiddles
with traditional grip, I have a much better appreciation of that type of skill that I used to.

I remember someone had posted a solo of wonderful press rolls, etc. from the drummer in the Dave Clark Five, a while back. That was jaw dropping as well.

It's rare that people actually understand how complex drumming is, thanks!
