3. I went to a Sargent exhibition in Portland about a year and a half ago.
Amazing, the things were just luminous.

5. He's one of my favorite artists - perhaps the ultimate favorite.
My interest in people extends to portraits and his are so incredibly beautiful. When you look at an original you can almost feel the presence of the subject, as if s/he were in the flesh, in front of you. Great choice! What inspired you?

12. The teacher I'm taking a class with...
'The Fundamentals of Painting' and Sargent most certainly falls under that category. You want the fundamentals? Study Sargent. :-)

Another painter often brought up is Anders Zorn, a contemporary of Sargent.

6. My favorite Sargent painting
is Madame X (Portrait of Madame Gautreau), for the execution of the painting as well as the story. In it's day this painting was was considered so risqué poor Madam Gautreau's reputation was shot, in France mind you.

7. he was a genious -- i love sergeant.
he packs so much information and metaphor into his paintings -- it boggles -- you have to gaze at tehm for a long time to begin to get all that's there.

8. Is he one of your favorites?
I sometimes confuse some of his work with Whistler.
I've seen several of Sargent's paintings including the above Madame X but I've never seen the Teddy Roosevelt before. Do you know where it is hanging?

11. Actually, I'm starting to learn more about him...
I'm taking a painting class and the teacher is really into him, in fact, this week's class is cancelled because he's going to Paris to see a Sargent show. :)

He suggested we study Sargent's work to get pointers about lighting, color, etc. Good suggestion because there's some really nice work in this book! Learning new stuff is fun!

As for artists I enjoy, I'm more into people like Giorgio de Chirico and Edward Hopper

9. Is he the painter he did the picture of the person (I think it was a guy)
standing next to, or maybe sitting next to, a thing of some sort? 'Cause I always confuse him with the other guy who did pictures, or maybe photos, of stuff like that. But I really like that one painting...

His portraits are the works I'm familiar with.

16. I Strongly Resemble "Madame X"
My hair is black and my nose isn't quite as sharp as hers, but other than that, there is a strong resemblance. Oh, and I wear glasses.
