I was a cheerleader and went on to be a sorority girl in college. That seriously puts my work colleagues into apoplexy. If I ever chose to divulge that at 16 I actually was in the local county (leading to the state) Miss .... pageant - I think I would give a few folks heart attacks. Not that I a crone - just that while decently tailored - I just don't put a whole lot of energy into 'beauty' - and am known to be wonky (as in policy wonky) rather than superficial which all of the aforementioned things suggest. Funny - years later my best friend in grade-through highschool - and through today - and I both found ourselves at a major University more than a thousand miles away from how in our thirties (she was a post doc in one field, I was in a phd program in another field) - one "off season" football game (pre-conference game) that was never well attended became "staff day" (as a postdoc she qualified for really cheap tickets). We went to the game and at what point were looking at the cheerleaders and thinking about the absurdity of the whole thing (to us) - and laughed quite a bit as we BOTH did that gig for a couple of years in jr/sr high back in the day. Was really a wtf were we thinking back then... moment.
